Venti uses performance as a way to soothe his often (some might even say constant) tremulous heart---he is a being overrun with guilt, a guilt so strong that he knows it cannot be concealed forever nor perfectly---so he expresses himself through song and music largely in part as a way to come to terms with his own internal feelings.
As a reflection of his nature, secret yearnings, etc, birds flock around Venti almost constantly. They hop around in his footfalls, perch in branches above his head, alight freely upon his slender form whether he's performing or not, and so on. When he doesn't have the strength or will to fly himself Venti lifts them (and others) up instead through such songs; some might even say the perfect song, the one you need to hear the most and right on time. Although he has yet to find such a song for himself, if such a thing even exists. His voice is backed by---and made up of---the fluttering of wings, a variety of chirps a trills and melodies and, as always, the wind lending power and direction.

((This isn't something he brings up often unless he's close to someone but Oscar can tell you exactly where his home planet is within the cosmos surrounding the Holy Land and he looks up at it often, especially when he can't sleep or is deeply troubled by something.
It's true that his home and family as he knew them were lost to Oscar the moment he entered the Sanctuary and accepted the Queen's blessing of sacrea (it's a burden that every guardian carries, some moreso than others, Oscar is very private about it) and while that will always be an acute source of pain for him what ultimately shines through the brightest is the love and dedication Oscar still carries, protecting the people he cares about is his calling, after all. From the moment he was born Oscar was meant to be a protector; be it as a soldier for his homeland or a chosen guardian of the Queen, and it's a role that he holds onto not merely out of pride but with every emotion that his heart possesses, both good and bad.
Oscar's home will always be a source of strength, perspective, and motivation for him---both it and his family on the whole were the first of these, in fact, especially regarding his sister---and no matter how far away it is or how things move on without him nothing will change how Oscar feels and he'll do everything he can to keep it/them safe.))
