June Book Reviews: Floodtide by Heather Rose Jones
Book four of a loosely linked series. In Floodtide, Roz is a laundry maid who is turned out without references after being caught in an affair with another young woman on the staff. A chance encounter with a kind dressmaker places her in the household of the mysterious court alchemist Margerit Sovitre, where Roz is drawn into a world of magic and intrigue...
Unlike the rest of the series, Floodtide is set firmly downstairs, rather than in the exalted world of balls and duels. While characters from earlier novels do appear (frequently), the point of view stays with Roz as she navigates her new position, negotiates an apprenticeship with a dressmaker, and develops a crush on a rowboat girl. The plot doesn't have an overarching romance plot and leans towards slice of life, although there is overlapping plot with the prior books in the series. I liked how Roz had the space to tell her own story rather than allowing prior characters to overwhelm the plot, and I appreciated the new view of Alpennia from the perspective of a servant whose family depends on her to send money home. (Prior characters have been at least impoverished scholars, if not outright aristocrats). It's a light, charming piece of historical fantasy alternate history, although I'm not sure how well it would read as a standalone at this point. New character, but many of the prior plot threads are picked up from earlier novels.
