This newsletter is a small weekend smörgåsbord around a few things that I've been coming back to.

I have a nondescript stainless steel bottle opener that I bought in an "antique" shop in Campbell River. I feel an affinity for this little bottle opener far more than its worth or quality.  The handle is the right length, it is the right weight, it has a nice shape, and it opens bottles. Slam dunk. Jasper Morisson the furniture designer invented the term "super normal" in 2006, which led to a book ogether with Naoto Fukasawa and an exhibition.

"The objects that really make a difference to our lives are often the least noticeable ones, that don't try to grab our attention. They're the things that add something to the atmosphere of our homes and that we'd miss the most if they disappeared. That's why they're 'super normal.'"

Both share an interesting design philosophy:

"The two designers share a common commitment to reinventing the principles of early modernism: technological innovation and fitness for purpose. Central to everything they do is to question whether they can justify creating something new in an environmental crisis when our lives are already filled with too much stuff."

Like my charming Swiss vegetable peeler, a classic design largely unchanged from 1943, sometimes life can be a little better because of design.

This lovely little island with a Linden tree is the first part of an 'archipelago' of man-made islands in the Copenhagen harbour, with a floating sauna island, floating gardens, floating mussel farms, and a floating diving platform to come. Would be nice to see more of these type of projects popping up in Canada. If someone knows how we can build a floating sauna, get in touch, it's long been a dream project.
