The pain in Magnusâ neck lessens ever so slightly as he leans back against the sofa. His muscles ache unimaginably. Magic depletion is never fun. It feels like heâs left half of himself out in the world. He groans as he stretches his limbs, letting his eyes close.
Itâs how Alec finds him when he comes out of the bedroom. He walks over to Magnus and sits down next to him.
âHey.â He says softly, brushing his fingers gently against Magnusâ cheek, âRough day?â
âThe worst.â
Alec hums softly as he leans forward and brushes his lips against Magnusâ cheek. His fingers run gently through Magnusâ hair, and itâs all Magnus can do to keep a satisfied noise of pleasure from slipping past his lips.
He raises his own fingers to peer at them. The nail polish is chipping at the corners. Magnus makes a face. He would remedy the situation by waving a hand, but the exhaustion that runs through him is so bone-deep that he canât even bring himself to do it.
Alec notices. âYou want me to do it?â he asks. Magnus turns to look at him. He has a soft smile on his face.
Itâs the first time heâs offered to do anything like this. Magnus feels a smile of his own begin to tug at the corners of his lips.
Alec stands up then, and walks into the bedroom. He comes back a few moments later, holding onto the wicker basket that holds all of the nail polish Magnus owns. He sits back down next to him. Magnus pushes himself up until heâs sitting properly.
âAlexander, you donât have to ââ
âMagnus, shut up.â Alec chides with a smile. He picks up the basket and begins to pick through the nail polish.
Alexanderâs hair is a rumpled mess, and heâs dressed in one of his older sweatshirts, one thatâs a dark grey, and that has a small stripe of bright blue paint along the side from a painting adventure with the youngest Lightwood sibling. Magnus loves him like this. When he seems to blend into his life, like he was the final piece to fall into place for everything to feel complete.
He pulls out a shade Magnus hasnât worn in a long time, a shimmering black hue that shifts to a dark, glittering purple with changes in the light.
âWhat about this one?â he asks, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
Magnus simply nods. He doesnât think he could speak through the overwhelming affection he feels for the man in front of him.
He watches, heart in throat, as Alec takes his hand in his, as he slowly works the rings off his fingers. As each ring is removed, he presses his lips lightly to that finger. He canât remember the last time someone had treated him like this, like something to be cherished in quiet moments. His heart stutters in his chest with every caress of Alecâs lips against his skin, with every touch of his fingers against his.
Magnus lets his fingers find the curve of Alecâs cheek, running his thumb gently over the expanse of his cheekbone. He feels it to the tips of his toes when Alec turns his head to the side and brushes his lips against his wrist.
Magnus loves him so much it hurts.
Alec takes a cotton ball soaked in remover and begins to take off the nail polish covering his nails. Magnus could have done it himself; he wouldnât even have had to lift a finger. But he lets himself be taken care of. Lets himself savour the care Alexander puts into every movement.
âOkay, bear with me,â Alec says with a small laugh as he picks up the nail polish bottle, giving it a small shake, âIâve never done this before.â
âItâll turn out perfect either way.â
Alec rolls his eyes affectionately. He ducks his head to focus on the task at hand.
And it might just be the most endearing thing Magnus has ever seen in his life. The tip of Alecâs tongue sticks out of his mouth. His eyebrows are furrowed together in concentration. His steady archerâs fingers hold onto the brush like itâs his lifeline, but even the steadiness of his application does nothing to help him stay within the nail. He ends up getting a lot of polish on Magnusâ skin.
But Magnus really canât find it in him to care. Not even a little bit. Not when Alec looks like that.
âThis is hard.â Alec whines, his voice going a little higher, the way it does when heâs frustrated, âHow do you do this so well?â
âWell I usually just, how do you say, âsnap my fingers.ââ Magnus says through a grin.
Alec throws him an unimpressed look. He glances down at his handiwork, and pouts. âYou think I should activate my precision rune? I swear I should be better at stuff like this. This just looks like I did it with my eyes closed. You know what? Iâm gonna activate my precision ru ââ
Magnus shuts him up in the most effective way he knows. He leans forward and presses his lips to Alecâs, swallowing the little oompf that falls from his throat. It takes Alec a second to melt into the kiss, and when he does, Magnus can feel the outline of the smile that takes over his mouth. Itâs a sweet thing, something precious. Something to remember forever.
When he pulls back, Alecâs smile takes over his entire face. Magnus could draw it from memory, if he wanted to.
âI love you,â he says quietly, âthank you for doing this for me.â
Alec abandons the nail polish bottle to take Magnusâ face in his hands. Magnus doesnât think heâll ever get used to the way Alexander looks at him sometimes. Like heâs the only thing worth looking at.
âI love you.â Alec whispers back, in a sigh.
Magnus brings his hand up to cup Alecâs. Alecâs eyes grow wide.
âDonât do that! Youâll ruin my hard work.â He scolds, pulling his hands away to take Magnusâ in his again, gingerly, avoiding his nails. He blows softly against the drying polish.
âKind of hard to make it worse than it already is, donât you think?â Magnus teases. Alec gasps and smacks him in the chest.
âAsshole.â He says, but heâs smiling too much for the insult to land.
Magnus wants to bottle this moment, wants to save every single detail in technicolour. The way Alecâs eyes seem to shine just a little more. The way his thumb runs gently, absent-mindedly, over Magnusâ fingers. The way he pulls Magnus to him until heâs settled against Alecâs chest, and the way he wraps his arms around his middle, fingers still intertwined with Magnusâ. The rise and fall of his chest, and the steady beat of his heart alongside Magnusâ, as he presses his lips gently into Magnusâ hair.
My greatest gift.
And maybe Magnus doesnât realise it when Alec runs his thumb over Magnusâ ring finger once, twice, and an infinite more times as he falls asleep in Alecâs embrace. Maybe thereâs no way for him to know how Alec finds himself smiling uncontrollably at the mere thought of what that finger holds for them.
Maybe he doesnât hear it when Alec whispers, âIâm going to marry you,â against his temple, softly, just as sleep begins to pull at him as well.

In the minutes that had passed after Catarina had left the loft, Magnus found that he couldnât stop touching Alexander. He was afraid to look away, as if Alexander might stop breathing if Magnus looked away. The image of him, lying on the dirty ground of the alleyway, his own arrow buried into his chest - it burns itself into his mind. It cuts through him, along with the feeling of blinding fear, and of helplessness that had poisoned him as heâd realised that he couldnât do anything to help him.
It was a terrifying feeling. To be utterly and completely helpless in the face of Alexanderâs life slipping away.
Alecâs healed hand rests on the couch between them. The skin is still pink around his wrist, and slightly swollen, despite Catarinaâs best efforts. As he shifts to face Magnus, the collar of his shirt falls to the side, exposing a bit of the white bandage that covers the slowly healing wound on his chest. Magnusâ stomach twists itself at the sight of it.
âMagnus.â Alecâs voice is soft, and gentle. The one Magnus has only ever heard when itâs directed to him.
Turning to look at him, Magnus runs his gaze over Alecâs face, taking in the line of worry that creases the skin between his eyebrows. He wants to reach out and smooth it out.
Alec cocks his head to the side, regarding Magnus with an expression he canât quite read. A second or so passes before Alec is standing up, reaching into his pocket to pull out his phone. He glances at Magnus. Â
âCome on. Get up.â
Magnus narrows his eyes at him. âWhat are you doing?â
Alec doesnât answer, eyes trained on his phone while he holds out his free hand to Magnus. He turns to look at Magnus expectantly. Magnus sighs and takes his hand, allowing himself to be pulled to his feet.
âAlexander. What are you doing?â Magnus repeats.
âI,â Alec pauses, smiling when soft music begins to play from his phone. He places it down on the coffee table and wraps an arm around Magnusâ waist, pulling him closer until heâs flush against his chest, Â âam dancing with you.â
Magnus is lost for words. Itâs been so long since he last did this, since heâd told Alec late one night, in a conversation that had carried on for hours and hours in between silk sheets, that dancing was one of the few things that brought him peace, and calm.
One of them, because the other is currently holding onto him like he never wants to let go. And itâs love that Magnus sees in the soft crinkles that surround Alexanderâs eyes when he smiles at him, the gentle caress of his fingers against his waist that make him feel like nothingâs wrong. Like nothing is too much, too painful, that couldnât be eclipsed by this moment.
âYour arm.â Thatâs all Magnus can manage to get out, through the emotion settling itself in his throat.
âMy arm is just fine.â Alec says softly, pressing his lips gently to Magnusâ forehead.
Itâs the simple melody of acoustic guitar that surrounds them, wraps them in an inexplicable warmth that feels like nothing could ever break it. Magnusâ eyes sting with the promise of tears as he wraps his arms around Alec and lets himself be pulled closer. He places his head in the crook of Alecâs neck, and just breathes, breathes in everything that makes him whole.
âThank you.â The words that escape him are so soft, like a breath, that heâs not sure if Alec even heard him.
Alecâs arms tighten around him as they move slowly to the music. Itâs nothing beautiful; not a display of skill or talent, but it means the world to Magnus. He could stay like this forever.
Alecâs breath plays gently over the skin of his neck. A breath that might not have been there, if Magnus had been but a second late. The mere thought of it shakes him to his very core.
âI almost lost you today.â he whispers, in a voice that seems so unlike his own.
A soft sigh escapes Alexanderâs lips. He presses closer, and kisses Magnusâ neck. His stubble tickles the skin of his neck, and warmth spreads from that spot. Magnus lets himself feel the beat of his heart, lets himself feel the warmth of Alecâs skin.
Heâs alive. Heâs alive. Heâs alive.
âYou didnât. Iâm right here. Iâm not going anywhere.â
âI love you.â The words fall from him immediately, like a knee-jerk reaction. As if theyâre always waiting on the tip of his tongue, waiting to find their way to Alexander.
Alec pulls back then, so that he can look at Magnus. He moves his hands from his waist and brings them up to his face. Magnus lets his eyes flutter shut for a moment, before turning his head to press a kiss to Alecâs palm. Alecâs thumb comes up to collect a tear that had escaped Magnusâ eyes.
He didnât even know heâd started crying.
âI love you too.â Alec says, eyes soft and gentle, âSo fucking much.â
He drops a hand from Magnusâ face to hold onto one of his. His fingers intertwine with Magnusâ, and his gaze falls to their clasped hands.
âIâm sorry.â His voice is strained, âIâm so sorry.â
Magnusâ brows furrow together, âWhy are you apologising, my love?â
âYou gave up everything for Jace. For me.â Â
âNot everything.â Magnus says, because his everything is standing right in front of him, âNot you.â
Alec shakes his head slightly, like heâs at a loss for words when Magnus says things like this. Magnus forces a smile onto his face. Alec has had enough pain for one day.
âIâm fine, Alexander.â He tries with all his might to keep his voice from wavering, âIâll figure something out.â
A pained look finds its way into Alecâs eyes. âYou donât always have to be so strong.â He whispers. His thumb runs gently over the curve of Magnusâ cheekbone, âI know how much your magic meant to you, Magnus.â
He should have expected it. Alec has always had a knack for seeing beyond a façade, no matter how carefully constructed it may be. Heâs a protector. And Magnus feels the weight of everything that had happened sink into his shoulders. He feels the lack of the familiar thrum of magic under his skin, feels the sickening emptiness of the well inside him. Everything is hollow.
âI donât know what to do.â Magnus confesses, voice choked, and then he lets himself fall apart, lets himself sag and release the tension from his shoulders and lets Alec hold onto him, lets him help him pick up the pieces of whatâs left of him, âI really donât know what to do.â
âWeâll fix this. I promise.â Alecâs voice is resolute, unwavering, âIâll move heaven and earth to find a way to fix this.â
Alecâs eyes are fierce, strong, like everything about him. Itâs just one of the endless things about him that Magnus commits to memory. Alec loves deeply, guilelessly, with every part of his heart. And Magnus lets himself be enveloped by that love, lets himself find the strength he needs to overcome this in Alec. In the man who feels like he was the universeâs gift to Magnus, for anything good heâs ever done in his life.
Magnus loves him like heâs all thatâs left in the world.
Alecâs fingers touch the corners of his unglamoured eyes. They flutter shut of their own accord. Magnus had forgotten about them. That theyâre out in the open for all to see, now. He feels exposed. Like a nerve.
Nothing, however, could prepare him for the surge of emotion that takes over him when Alec leans forward and presses his lips gently to each eyelid. All the breath leaves Magnus, and his hands come up to clasp Alecâs wrists. And heâs the only real thing in the world then, Alexander Lightwood. The only thing keeping his head above the surface of the water.
âI promise.â Alec whispers then, and the conviction lacing every syllable tugs at something in Magnusâ chest
What did I do to deserve you, Alexander?
âAnd in the meantime,â Alec continues, a playful smile finding its way onto his face as Magnus opens his eyes to look at him, âI should probably train you.â His fingers run gently down Magnusâ sides, leaving a trail of blazing warmth in their wake. âYou know. For self-defence.â
Magnus raises a brow at him, unable to wipe his own smile from his face, âYou just want to see me in tight training clothes.â
Alecâs grin just gets wider as he shrugs, âCan you blame a guy?â
Magnus lets out a laugh, and wraps his arms around Alecâs neck before leaning forward to kiss him.
âAnyways, magic or not,â he whispers against Alecâs lips, âIâd still kick your butt, Shadowhunter.â
Alecâs eyes narrow playfully. âWeâll see about that.â
Itâs moments like this that make Magnus feel like the world had really found its way into his palms with Alexander. Like there was really nothing that he couldnât conquer with Alec by his side. The answers to everything seem to lie with the man in front of him, the man who looks at him like heâs all that matters.
Magnus kisses him then, lips lingering, feeling his breath and his heartbeat align themselves with Alecâs, until theyâre two halves of a whole that seemed like the universe itself had willed it into existence.
âI will fix it. I will use the last drop of my power if itâs the death of me.â
His voice is laden with guilt, and sorrow, and resolve, and it sends a torrent of pain through Alec. He pushes aside everything that had happened, from that disastrous breakfast, to the image of the box still branded into his memory, and steps forward. He tugs Magnus to him, wrapping his arms around his shoulders tightly.
It takes Magnus a second to sink into the hug. But then he does, and Alec feels him melt against his body, feels the residual tension from their meeting with the others earlier slowly leave his shoulders and fall to the floor. Suddenly, everything fades away. The noise of the Institute melts into the background. All Alec can feel is him, his grounding presence against the chaos of everything.
When they break apart, he lingers close. He canât step away. Not now.
Magnus glances up at him then. âAre you coming back tonight?â His voice is soft, barely above a whisper, apprehension lingering. Like he still expects Alec to push him away. Â
Alec swallows, trying to ignore the painful muscle that pulls in his chest. Thereâs nothing he wants more. He wants to forget everything, for just a moment, wants to go to the loft that he had thought of as home, wants to feel Magnusâ arms wrap around him. He wants to shove aside the storm brewing inside him, the fear for his parabatai. The pain of the argument, and Magnusâ eyes, brewing with anger, cutting into him not a day ago.
The steady beat of his own heart, something that had begun to feel like a countdown.
âDo you want me to?â He asks carefully, because he wonât, not if Magnus needs his space.
âYes.â The word rushes out of Magnus, quiet, yet fervent. His eyes are open, soft brown, lined with muted black, gazing into Alecâs.
Alec brings a hand up to touch his face, slowly at first, asking for permission, and cups his face gently when Magnus leans into his touch. His eyes flutter shut for just a second, before he opens them again.
âOkay.â
No sooner than the word falls from his lips, Alec feels the familiar surge of wind from a portal hit the back of his neck. He folds his fingers into Magnusâ, and walks backwards until the wave of magic envelopes him. Portal travel has never been the most comfortable experience, but itâs different when itâs Magnus. To Alec, it feels as familiar as Magnusâ rings pressing into the palm of his hand, as familiar as his smile on a warm morning. As familiar as his lips, mapping out constellations on his skin.
And Magnus keeps his eyes fixed on Alexander as they step into the bedroom of the loft. The light is softer here. The rushed voices and sounds of the Institute linger in his ears, slowly softening into silence.
Magnus waves his free hand to change both of them out of their clothes and into more comfortable ones. He walks them over to the bed. Feels Alexanderâs fingers tighten their hold on his own as they slip under the covers.
It feels different. A line of tension winds its way down the contours of Alexanderâs shoulders, a residual crease between his eyebrows. Thereâs a space between them on the bed where they lay facing each other. A space currently occupied by their intertwined hands.
The curve of Alexanderâs lip cuts through the soft light of the room. Magnus allows himself to memorize every inch of him. Allows himself to find peace, and home, in the luminous hazel of his eyes.
âIâm sorry.â Magnus whispers, and almost immediately, the burning begins in his throat, and his eyes sting with the promise of tears. Â
Alec brings Magnusâ hand up to his lips, eyes wet. He presses a small kiss to the back of his palm. âIâm sorry too,â he murmurs against his skin. His gaze finds Magnusâ again, âWe both said things we shouldnât have.â
Magnus licks his lips before reaching a hand to place it against Alecâs cheek. He runs his thumb over the expanse of his cheekbone, feeling the prickle of day-old stubble against his fingers. Alecâs eyes are wide, and soft, and heâs looking at him with the kind of look Magnus only sees when itâs directed towards him. Like the doors to heaven could open up for him and heâd still want to be right here, in Magnusâ arms.
Heâs so beautiful.
âI was reminded of something today.â Alec says quietly, thumb drawing small circles over the back of Magnusâ palm, âI donât know if you already know this, but I hadnât remembered it till now.â
He swallows, takes in a breath before speaking again, âNephilim â we only love once.â
Magnusâ fingers stop in their gentle movements, âWhat do you mean?â
Alec shifts closer to him, âI mean, we only fall in love, like truly fall in love, once. In our whole lives. We could be with a number of people, but once we find the one? Thatâs â thatâs it. Forever.â
Magnus had known of the intensity of a mortalâs life, how they felt everything more in every sense of the word. But he hadnât expected this. Hadnât expected to find the beat of Alecâs heart tied inexplicably to his own. And he canât remember when his heart had picked up its pace, when it had begun to feel like nothing outside this room and this cocoon of blankets and this man lying across from him mattered.
âSo what you said over breakfast, itâs not true. Even if I had been with someone before you, it wouldnât have made a difference,â Alec continues, completely oblivious to Magnusâ heart thrumming an erratic rhythm against his chest, âbecause youâre it for me. You were always going to be it. You are, quite literally, the love of my life.â
Itâs in moments like this, when Alexander speaks to him as though there is a direct connection between his mouth and his heart, that leave Magnus lost for words. Alec has always been the kind of person who, when he feels something, feels it to the core of his being. The intensity with which he feels, and loves, is something that Magnus loves endlessly about him.
And itâs the wrong time to be at a loss for words, because all Magnus wants to do now is tell Alec that there is never going to be anyone else for him either, that this, what they have, this is it. This is what he wants forever, that Alexander Lightwood is the love of his life. That Magnus would move heaven and earth and hell and everything in between to find a way to keep this until time itself became obsolete.
He leans forward and closes the distance between their lips. Itâs a kiss meant to love, and affirm. A promise, that this is as real for him as it is for Alexander.
When he pulls back, Alecâs eyes remain shut for a few more seconds, like he had found himself again. Magnus drinks in the way the hazel of his eyes reminds him of the forest, and of sunshine, and of honeyed kisses all at once.
âDo you have any idea how much I love you?â Itâs not a question Magnus expects an answer to, and he sees the effect of the words in Alec, in the way the crease between his eyebrows softens immediately, the way his lips part. The way pure adoration pours from his eyes.
Magnus pulls him closer, until Alexanderâs breath ghosts over his collarbones. He wraps his arm around Alecâs torso, pulling the one still locked with Alecâs up to his chest.
âIf I could have my way with the world, Iâd have you by my side forever. Iâd never let you go.â
He presses his lips to Alecâs knuckles. âI meant what I said, Alexander, all those weeks ago,â he says quietly, âThat youâd unlocked something in me. This â this is it for me too.â
And I will do whatever it takes to keep it that way.
âI love you.â Alec whispers, and Magnus can sense the underlying promise in his voice, and he knows that even though the fight to find their forever will be long, and arduous, he wonât be alone.
He kisses Alexander again, for that promise. For a love that feels like that the stars had aligned themselves right in front of him.
The words hang in the air for a minute after the door closes behind Maryse. Magnus looks at it for a few seconds, a sense of comfort and ease washing over him, something he never thought heâd ever associate with Maryse Lightwood.
Alexanderâs eyes are trained on him. Magnus turns to see him, luminous hazel eyes looking at him as though heâs the reason behind everything good in the world.
Itâs a smile that seems to float its way into the deepest recesses of his heart. For a moment, this moment, everything falls into place. Nothing is too difficult, or painful. Magnus can forget about the demonic activity ravaging the city, can forget about the infuriatingly smug expression on Lorenzo Reyâs face, because none of it matters. None of it, not when he has Alexander smiling at him like this, in a moment of peace.
Magnus feels like heâs loved him for years. Like their love was woven into the fabric of the universe from the moment of its inception.
He reaches forward and cups Alecâs face, and lets his thumb run across the curve of his cheekbone. Alec leans into his touch, smile widening. Magnus feels his heart flutter when he turns his head and presses his lips to Magnusâ palm.
Alec watches as Magnus drops his hand and walks back into the loft, watches as he lets out a sigh and stretches his arms out. And he wonders how heâd ever gone a day without feeling like this. Without feeling his stomach twist itself into knots, without feeling like forever was something that could have meaning.
He follows him inside, stopping right behind him and wrapping an arm around his waist. Alec presses his lips to his shoulder, and Magnus turns around in his arms, eyes shining.
âThereâs nothing to thank me for, my love.â Magnus leans forward and pressing a soft kiss to Alecâs lips, âAnything for you.â
Alec smiles at him, lets himself memorise the soft uptick of Magnusâ lips. But soon, his motherâs face finds its way back into his mind. He remembers the tears that sprung to her eyes, tears she hid behind an unwavering voice and steadfast strength. His father had escaped the wrath of the Clave unscathed, and his mother was taking the brunt of everything. The injustice of it burns its way through him.
âI have to help her, Magnus.â Alec murmurs, letting his thumb draw little circles over the cloth covering Magnusâ hip, âSheâs â sheâs made her mistakes in the past, but deruning? It would ruin her life, everything sheâs ever worked for. Itâs so unfair.â
Magnus cups his face gently. His hands are warm, a contrast against the cool bumps of metal of the many rings that adorn his fingers. Itâs a feeling Alec has come to associate with safety, and love, and home.
âWe will help her, Alexander.â Magnusâ shine with conviction, âWhatever it takes â we will fight this. I promise you.â
Alec takes him in, the other half of his soul. The man who changed his life in the best way possible. Magnus gives him a smile then, a smile that sears itself into his memory. It touches the very tips of his being. Itâs like a breath of fresh air, like feeling his head break the surface of water. Alec leans forward and rests his forehead against Magnusâ. A small sigh falls from Magnusâ lips, a sound that grounds Alec against the chaos of the world raging outside. He pulls him closer, until all he can fathom is the adoration in his eyes, and Alec finds himself again in the steady beat of Magnusâ heart against his own.

Anonymous asked:Â Hey, do you take prompts? If yes, would you do some soft/or angsty, or soft AND angsty Claia? Like Maia waiting for Clary to come home after a hunt and sheâs late or something
Here you go anon! This is my first time writing Claia, so I hope I did them and your prompt justice :â)
Warning: this is a bit on the angsty side, but there is fluff involved. Chronic injuries/pain are mentioned.
Three hours.
Maia taps her phone screen once, twice, and a few more times, but nothing changes. The blankness of the screen doesnât change. No ring, no vibration to signal the arrival of a text message. Itâs been three hours, and now, itâs starting to feel like the silence is slowly closing in on her.
Clary had been called in on an emergency hunt after a large nest of Ravener demons were found wreaking havoc in SoHo. Sheâd groaned playfully as the phone call came in from Isabelle, before kissing Maia and heading out, promising that sheâd only be gone an hour or so, and that they would have plenty of time to continue their movie night when she got back.
It isnât uncommon for Shadowhunter missions to run overtime. Something new always pops up, another fire that needs putting out, another burst of demonic activity spurred by the one before. Itâs something Maia had grown accustomed to, ever since she found her life and her heart intertwined with Claryâs. It hadnât mattered as much initially.
And then Maiaâs worst nightmare had come true.
It scares her, how quickly images of Claryâs body, battered and bruised, and her face, pale and unmoving as the doctors in the Instituteâs infirmary worked around the clock to save her come to the front of her mind. Isabelleâs voice, trembling, stammering about Clary being overpowered during their mission by three rogue ex-Circle members. Then, the feeling of Alecâs arms around her, holding her back as she kicked and screamed and tried with all her might to get to Clary as Magnus stood over her, magic flowing in never-ending streams from his fingers, his face hardened in concentration as he did what the doctors couldnât do to save her life.
Itâll be okay. Sheâll be okay, Alec had whispered, over and over again. Words that Maia held onto like they were a lifeline as the colour slowly returned to Claryâs face.
It took months for Clary to heal from the injuries she sustained that night. Despite Magnusâ best efforts, her shoulder never fully healed. It became an injury she would have to live with, along with the memories that tortured her at times, especially when darkness fell.
Nights of Clary waking up screaming and crying, of Maia holding her with all her might as her sobs evened out, slowly but surely.
Three hours.
Maia pulls the blanket tighter around herself, but nothing she does seems to dull the chill thatâs slowly starting to take over. Clary would have called. Or perhaps she just might not have gotten to her phone. Perhaps sheâs too busy trying to finish the hunt. Thereâs no reason for Maia to feel the panic thatâs festering inside of her. The deafening silence coming from her phone doesnât mean that she â
The sound of the front door clicking open echoes through the dark, silent apartment. Then, the shuffling of boots, and the clink of a charm bracelet that Maia distinctly remembers as the one sheâd given to Clary for their anniversary last year. Thatâs all it takes for Maia to fly out of her cocoon of blankets on the sofa and head to the front door.
Relief floods every vein in Maiaâs body as she takes in the sight of fiery red hair stooped low as Clary unties her shoelaces, before slipping them off her feet. Her fingers move to her thigh holster, movements slow and tired as she works it open. She raises her head a few moments later, eyes meeting Maiaâs for the first time.
âHey.â Fatigue laces her voice as her lips quirk upwards in a tired smile. Maia finds herself scanning every inch of her lovely face, for cuts, or bruises. For the telltale pull of her left arm that means that her shoulder is giving her pain.
âWhy are you still awake?â Clary asks. She turns her attention to the strap holding her dual kindjals to her waist. Â
âYouâre late.â Maia tries to keep the tightness in her voice at bay, âYou didnât call.â
âThe mission took a while.â Clary says, in between the sounds of the kindjals hitting the floor, âI didnât want you to stay awake, be scared.â
âI was scared, Clary.â Maia blurts out, the words rushing out in a voice she barely recognises as her own, all constricted and heavy with emotion.
Claryâs hair moves with the gentle ferocity of glowing embers as she turns to face Maia.
âI was scared.â Maia repeats, voice considerably softer, âIâve been scared for a while now. Every time you donât come home on time, or when you donât tell me if that hurts, even when I know it does.â She gestures at Claryâs shoulder.
Clary abandons her weapons, and moves closer, eyes burning with something indecipherable, something that tugs at every little thing in Maiaâs heart.
âI just canât â I canât stomach the fact that one night Iâll wake up to my phone ringing and this voice I donât know will tell me that you â youâŠâ Maia trails off, voice caught unbearably in her throat as Clary stops right in front of her, so close that Maia could count the long lashes that framed those haunting eyes if she wants to.
Her breath is soft, wisps of warmth playing across Maiaâs lips.
âIâm sorry.â Clary whispers hoarsely. She raises her hand to cup Maiaâs face gently, the pad of her thumb swiping away tears Maia hadnât known had fallen, âIâm so sorry. Iâm right here.â
Maia swallows hard, raising her own hand to clasp Claryâs wrist. She feels Claryâs pulse against her fingertips, heartbeat strong and sure underneath soft, tender skin. A heartbeat that had almost ceased to exist, on the worst night of Maiaâs life.
âI know.â Maia says, voice thick with tears, âI know. I just kept thinking back to that night when ââ She tightens her grip on Claryâs wrist, bring her other hand to her waist and pulling her closer.
âHey.â Clary says gently, âIâm right here.â
She leads them to the sofa, where they sit, limbs tangled together and foreheads pressed close. Maia finds her ground in the rise and fall of Claryâs chest, in the way her breath blooms warm across her collarbones. Claryâs hands hold her face like sheâs the most precious thing in the world, her thumb running gently over the curves of her cheekbones. Itâs all the little things about her that slowly calm Maiaâs breathing.
âIâm sorry. I should have called. Iâm sorry.â She murmurs the words softly, continuously, into the space between them where their breaths become one.
Maia raises her head finally to look into the shimmering green of Claryâs eyes. Theyâre like the forest, beautiful, and alive with a thousand heartbeats.
âI love you.â She whispers, helplessly almost, because she does. She loves this woman so much that sometimes she doesnât know what to do with it.
Clary presses her lips to hers in a kiss that Maia feels to the tips of her being. Sheâs here, sheâs here, sheâs okay, sheâs right here.
âI love you too.â Clary says against her mouth, pressing another kiss to it before pulling back and kissing Maiaâs forehead.
They fall asleep on the sofa that night, pressed so close that even the air canât come between them. Maia wakes up to Claryâs hair tickling her chin, and to her arms wrapped tightly around her waist, and the beat of her heart in tandem with hers. She runs her fingers through Claryâs soft hair, and relishes in the blazing warmth of her body against hers. When Clary wakes up, and when the first thing she does is to press a lazy, lingering kiss to the side of Maiaâs neck, Maia feels calmer than sheâs felt in a long time.
Itâs finally here! I finally got my shit together, and Iâm so excited to get started on my first ever multi-chapter for malec :â)Â This is inspired by the 2015 Bollywood film Dil Dhadakne Do. If you haven't watched, I HIGHLY recommend you do so. Your life will be Changedâą for the better.Â
Synopsis:Â
âTurkey and Greece? Luxury cruise ship that you donât even have to pay for?â Catarina scoffs, pushing her blue-tipped braids behind her shoulders, âThe Magnus I know would never pass up an opportunity like that.â
And then she gets this knowing look in her eyes, setting her nail file down. âUnless of course, thereâs an underlying reason. And if that underlying reason just happens to have dark hair, and hazel eyes, and âthe crooked smile that sets fire to every vein in your body.â Thatâs what you said, if I remember correctly, hm?â
//
Itâs been twelve years since Magnus and Alec last saw each other, ever since everything went downhill. Ever since they were forced apart, separated by continents and oceans, putting their love through the most difficult of tests. Now theyâre going to be face to face with each other again, on a cruise ship, where hundreds of miles of water in every direction prevent any possible escape.
Only time will tell if they figure things out this time.
