“Alright, let’s take it from the top,” Flik muttered and straightened while staring down at a puddle. “Hey--ew, no.” He cleared his throat, “Hey, Atta! No, too casual. Okay, Okay...Hello, Miss Atta -- blah!” He hit his head a few times. “Just don’t be awkward about it!”
“Wow, you’ve finally lost it.”
Flik sighed, not bothering to turn around, “I have to make it perfect.”
Hopper walked up beside him, glancing down at the puddle, “Is the water your wingman?”
“Very funny,” the ant deadpanned. “I’m practicing my facial expressions. Not too excited. Not too dull. Just...”
“Casual?”
“Yes!” Flik rubbed a hand down his face, “Why is this so difficult?”
The grasshopper pretended to focus on his claws, “Maybe ‘cause someone’s planning on popping the big question?”
Flik panicked, “Is it that obvious? Do you think Atta already knows? What will I do if she knows?” He pulled down on his antennae.
“Woah, kid, calm down. You’ll be on your knees having a stroke before you even propose to her.” Hopper grabbed him by the shoulders, “Look, all you gotta do is take her to a nice, secluded spot. Maybe have a picnic or something. Start up some conversation, then boom!”
“Boom?”
“Well, not, like, boom boom. But just, then you can ask her. Here, practice on me.”
Flik hesitated before clearing his throat, “Okay, um...hey, Atta! Would you like...to...m-marry me?”
Hopper hummed, “Uh...no,” he stated bluntly.
“Hopper!”
“Kidding, kidding! Just don’t be nervous, kid. Alright?” Hopper patted him on the back.
“Y-Yeah, alright.”

“Aw, Flik, I’d love to, really. But I think I came down with something,” Atta coughed, covering it with her elbow.
Flik deflated a bit, “Oh! Th-That’s fine,” he gave a weak smile. “Y-Yeah...um...I...had some other things I needed to take care of anyway, heh.”
Atta was sitting on the edge of her bed, “Really? Oh, alright. I was kind of hoping we could just hang out and talk.”
The ant stopped in his tracks, “Talk? W-Well yeah, I can stay.”
“What about those things you were going to do?”
“That? I-It can wait,” he laughed nervously, “nothing too important. Not that I don’t do important things! I do loads of serious stuff...planning a-and building...lots of constructing and testing involved...”
“Flik?”
“Yeah?”
She laughed and patted the space beside her, “Sit down.”
He laughed nervously, “Right.” Awkwardly, he sat down beside her, hands clasped in his lap. “So...how was your day?”
“It was good,” she laughed. Her laugh was like music to him. “How about yours? Any important things you’ve been working on?”
Flik hummed, dazed by her before shaking his head. Coming back to reality, “Th-That’s good! Uh, yeah, I’ve been...planning.”
“Planning what?”
“U-Uh...” He fiddled with his hands, “Just...new contraptions to help around the colony,” he pursed his lips to keep the truth from coming out.
For some reason, Atta looked a little crestfallen at his response. She gave a small smile, “You’re always full of great ideas. I don’t know how you do it.”
Thank God it wasn’t that bright in the room, or else she’d see the pink tint dusting his cheeks. “Ah, well, you have great ideas too.”
“Please, I can barely direct the harvesting line without messing up.”
“That’s not true. You do a great job, really. No one could do what you do every day...o-other than your mother of course.”
Atta smiled, “You always see the good in everyone. I’m almost convinced you think I could do nothing wrong.”
“Of course you can’t, you’re perfect.” Flik spoke without realizing. Atta gave him a weird look. “I-I mean you’re...perfectly capable of making mistakes like the rest of us.”
They stayed silent for a few heartbeats. “Do you enjoy it?” Flik finally asked. “Being queen, I mean.”
Atta took in a breath, “I guess so. It’s not too different than just...being like everyone else. Just more stress, really,” she scoffed. “I wish I had someone to help me all the time. Mother needs to enjoy her time off from running the colony for so many years.”
“I’d be happy to help,” Flik was quick to reply.
“You’re sweet, but you already have your inventions and--”
“They can wait. If you want help, I’ll be there for you, Atta. You’re my first priority.” His face went red again, wishing he could backtrack his words. That was the perfect line for a proposal. And he wasted it on an everyday conversation. She’d probably overlook the value of his words as just being friendly.
Atta smiled at him, “Really? You’ll always be there for me?”
Flik swallowed nervously, nodding. “Always.”
“So,” she took his hand in her own, “are you saying you’ll be by my side, for better or for worse? And that you want to spend the rest of your life with me?”
He laughed breathlessly, “Took the words right out of my mouth.”
She leaned in and kissed him, “Yes.”
“R-Really?”
“Of course, silly. There’s no one else in the world I’d want to marry.”
Flik hadn’t planned this far into the proposal. Then again, the proposal didn’t exactly go according to plan. Fortunately, Atta had it figured out and pulled him in for another kiss.
