When a flexible fitting is installed, the combined action of the nut and gland creates a mutual inclination between the two parts of the fitting and presses them tightly against the outer ring of the pipe.

After the flexible joint is installed on the pipe, the elastic seal is made to generate compression force by tightening the nut.

For flexible fittings in stainless steel, a squeeze connection can be used to secure the fitting to the pipe.
