Song Review: Noam Pikelny - “Old Banjo”
Noam Pikelny recently went to the Downtown Presbyterian Church in Nashville to perform “Old Banjo" from his forthcoming solo album.
In the resulting black-and-white video, Pikelny peels off a decidedly non-traditional series of riffs before turning to the final verse:
Once I had an old banjo, it was strung with twine/the only song that I could sing was ‘Trouble on my mind’
Pikelny told Rolling Stone County he learned the song from a banjo teacher when he was a kid; the teacher picked it up from folk singer Fleming Brown.
The tune appears on Universal Favorite, out March 3. The Punch Brother calls it “an honest-to-goodness solo album … performed with no band or accompaniment.”
