THE COLOSSEUM, ROME, ITALY (September 8, 2010)
Measuring 190 by 155 meters with three stories of arched entrances and seating about 50,000 spectators, it is the most massive ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is still the largest standing amphitheatre in the world today. Let’s not forget it was completed in 80 A.D.
A humongous fossil, I said to myself as I entered the Colosseum. One can only imagine the sights and sounds that accompanied the gladiatorial combats, wild animal fights, and even public executions that took place at the center of the gigantic structure.
