Here’s the bit from my post that got me thinking - mainly the fact that, when a situation is impossible, Ray gives up while Emma doesn’t:

I just re-read a few pages the other day so this scene is stuck in my head (jumping forward a bit here before I go back): 

Especially take note of what Sung-joo says about his chances of escape. I thought I remembered the translation I saw then using the word “Impossible,” but the meaning is basically the same. 

But Ray throwing himself into an impossible situation? This definitely isn’t characteristic of Ray earlier in the series: 

It was clear he didn’t want to leave with all of the siblings from the beginning because it was “impossible.” By his logical reasoning, there was no way they should all expect to be able to escape unharmed and then survive on their own out in new territory. He made it clear that he, Norman and Emma could make it out alive. Maybe Don and Gilda, but that was it. No exceptions. 

He reiterates this here again:

“It’s just not possible.” “If we attempt to take all of them with us, it’s clear as day that none of us will make it.”

Early-game Ray stuck to his guns. If something was impossible, that was it. He even went behind Emma’s back to try to get Norman to agree to it only being the five of them, because he was that sure he was right and that he was making the best choice, the only choice that would ensure their survival.

But then you see this: 

This is the chase leading up to Ray bumping into Sung-joo. But what’s different? 

“I’m not letting you bastards win.” 

“I’m not stopping anytime soon.”

“I’m not dying here.” 

I’m not giving up.”

Even as he’s literally surrounded by the farm demons at this point, he’s still holding on to hope that he can make it, that he’ll find a way around the situation. 

He even falls down and can’t move, but he’s still literally screaming at himself inside to keep going. 

Even screaming as Sunj-joo comes to his rescue, lol. But as Sung-joo stated in the page at the top, there was “0% chance of him surviving that situation.” It was impossible. Yet did he ever give up?? No!!!

This is a big moment for him I think, cause while he still considers the situation with a Ray approach - I need to make it back to the kids. They need me. Think, think, think your way out of this. It’s still less blind faith and more the obligation he feels and his promise to the kids that’s driving him. If he stops now, logically, the kids will be at a great loss and will have a much harder time surviving -but while he still considers the situation with a Ray approach, he did not give up when the situation was literally impossible.
