AFTER A MEAL it licks its eyes. It has a hinged head and little flaps instead of feet. This is Burton’s legless lizard, an animal worth getting to know.
Burton’s Legless Lizard stands apart from most legless lizards by operating, like a death adder, as a sit-and-wait predator. Hiding in leaf litter, possibly for days at a time, it lunges at passing lizards. It can wiggle its tail as a worm-like lure. Speed and grace are not necessary for this ‘lazy’ lifestyle.
A serious predator, a Burton’s can gulp down lizards as thick as itself. Small snakes are eaten as well. It has a hinged head so its snout can flex down at a 40 degree angle to maximise tooth grip on large prey. The long hinged teeth can be folded out of the way when not in use...

Burton's Legless Lizard (Lialis burtonis)
... also known as the New Guinea legless lizard, is a species of pygopodid lizard which means that it lacks forelegs and has only rudimentary hind legs. Pygopodid lizards are also referred to as "legless lizards", "flap-footed lizards" and "snake-lizards".
This species is endemic to Australia and Papua New Guinea. This lizard is found in a variety of habitats from deserts to the margins of rainforests but not in southern alpine areas and extreme northern deserts as would be expected based on its distribution.
Burton’s legless lizard is generally a diurnal feeder as prey is most commonly encountered during the day but it can be active at any time. This species feeds almost exclusively on lizards. Burton’s legless lizard also uses caudal luring as a feeding strategy which is rare in lizards. Eggs are laid under logs or rocks, on the ground, under leaf litter and sometimes in the nests of sugar ants...
