Flamboyants: The Queer Harlem Renaissance I Wish I'd Known by George M Johnson
This is illustrated nonfiction where Johnson provides short essays on various queer figures from the Harlem Renaissance and what their stories mean to them.
This was great! The entries about each figure are pretty short, so it's not the most informative book in the world, but Johnson does clearly state in the introduction that the book is intended as primer to introduce the reader to these figures in the hopes that we will do further reading on them. That said, I did still learn a good bit. Some of the historical figures I had never heard of and more still, like Josephine Baker and Zora Neale Hurston, I was aware of but had no idea that some historians believe them to have been queer.
Like Johnson suggests, I will have to do further reading on these people to truly feel informed about their lives, but this book does provide a fascinating array of individuals from whom to choose for further study. The illustrations are also gorgeous and I love the poems Johnson interjects between the bios. It's not a very in depth book, but I enjoyed my time with it and am glad I read it. 4.5⭐️
