WE.ARE.STOKED! to announce that Flaamingos (LA) and Like A Villain (Portland) will be bringing some ethereal weird to Dayton September 12.
TICKETS ON SALE MONDAY 12:01AM!
Flaamingos were formed in Los Angeles by Jerry Narrows (vocals, drum programming) and Daniel Koontz (guitar, bass, synth). The two played together in psych and shoegaze bands as youngsters then parted ways for a time. After bumping into one another at an Echo Park party spot in 2011, they decided to try collaborating again, this time crafting a new sound that would include traces of their past psych/shoegaze inclinations as well as a newer-found love for krautrock, post-punk, synth pop and new romantic shimmer. LA’s infamous Part Time Punks night took notice and the band have spent many a nights there performing and crafting what is their self-titled debut album which was released worldwide in Summer 2013 via Felte Records.
Flaamingos, the album, is hailed as the new wave of new wave. Pitchfork’s Paul Thompson remarks, “Little bursts of neon jut out through the darkness and momentarily light up the night” in his review last fall.
Like A Villain is the sonic brainchild of experimental loop composer Holland Andrews. In early 2010, Andrews began the solo project under this alias and has shaped a sound that creeps into the cracks of your soul as the name suggests. She pulls her influences from notable minimalist composers such as Arvo Pärt, contemporary vocalists including Diamanda Galás, and modern experimental musicians like Björk, and she is heavily influenced by Broadway and opera music. By creating a tapestry of live loops using her voice, clarinet, and glockenspiel, her aim is to emphasize the roots of organic sounds and create an emotional realm of sonic healing and magic. “…a musical theater-cultivated flair for the dramatic—…experimental music that revels in the dichotomy between pretty and provocative.” – JONATHAN FROCHTZWAJG, Willamette Weekly.
Bast, Andrew’s first full length album just released August 10th, has already received worshipping reviews.
