I wanted to talk about Elphaba leaving her hat behind. As you know in the stage show she takes the hat with her well Fiyero puts it on her head.
When I first saw this I was shocked that she didn’t take the hat because it played a huge role in her story it gave her confidence when she needed it most. To get out of her comfort zone and to stand up for what is right even when she was standing alone it gave her confidence and strength.
However that was always inside of her the hat just gave her the push she needed to do it. When she looks back it’s her saying thank you to the hat for giving her the push she needed. To find her happiness.
Leaving it behind doesn’t mean the hat didn’t work or mean anything to Elphaba it did but she has outgrown it and is now ready to movie on to something new.
Evolutions of a scarecrow!
Wizard of oz book: A sentient scarecrow. Not really sure why but he’s sentient. He wants to get a brain from the wizard. Wizard of oz movie: A sentient scarecrow. Even less backstory for why he’s sentient. Oh look he dances! Wants a brain from the wizard. Wicked book: A sentient scarecrow accompanying Dorothy. He becomes in charge of Oz but they replace him with another scarecrow because of ✨corrupt politicians✨. They probably set him on fire idk. Wicked musical: The Wicked Witch’s BOYFRIEND who is a PRINCE and loves DANCING gets TORTURED TO DEATH and in an act of LOVE she saves him by TURNING HIM INTO A SCARECROW WTF.
I saw Wicked For Good today and the most striking detail I loved in No Good Deed was how Elphaba saw the people she couldn't save. Elphaba has no other choice but to embrace the wickedness that had been thrust upon her by those who spouted propaganda and lies against her and she is looking back on her memories of the choices she had made. If she hadn't been such a commotion, then Nessa wouldn't resent her and Morrible wouldn't have noticed her and used her to become a powerful tool for the wizard. If Fiyero hadn't looked her way and fallen in love with her, he wouldn't have faced death. At this point Elphaba feels she has lost and failed everyone she has ever loved, either they have abandoned her, died or became something else entirely because she was trying to do good. She was trying to help them and she got nothing in return just a battle she had to face alone. Fiyero sacrificed his whole status just to be with Elphaba only for that moment to be cut short and for him to be taken away from her again. She tried to help Nessa find love again only for her to die while seeking and searching for that love. All of the animals chose not to fight with her and escaped to the impassable desert, turned against her by the lion who is ungrateful towards her for saving him as a cub as she was unable to save Dr Dillamond who was trapped in a cage rendered unable to speak. She has lost everything only because she was trying to help and do good things and believed only for a fleeting moment that she had found love again for it to be taken from her right before her eyes, she has nothing left to lose and hence must become the very person Oz sees her as because everything she has done has been taken for granted. Her cause and reason to fight has been taken from her. Why fight for your home if all it does is hate and take from you?
It is a moment of vulnerability for Elphaba because she feels regret for the people she couldn't save and that drives her to become the very thing people are most afraid of. In Elphaba's flashbacks during this song, we see her with Nessa and Doctor Dillamond as she remembered them at Shiz - so innocent, so carefree, so wise and then she sees Fiyero on the cross because she never got to have enough time with him because he was beaten half to death for being near her. Elphaba has had enough of losing the people who come close to her and decides to close her heart, internalizing all of her anger and grief towards Dorothy as she puts the blame on her for coming in like a commotion and ruining her life by setting up a chain reaction that took the most important people in her life.
Morrible and the Wizard brought Dorothy to Oz as a pawn to use against Elphaba and to kill her, this narrative was orchestrated all along and they knew if they brought her to Oz and inflicted harm on her sister and Fiyero, then Elphaba will be drawn out and vulnerable because she lost all the love she had, making her into the wicked witch, the villain of the story so they could kill her, not even comprehending that they were manipulating this young girl from Kansas to set Elphaba down a path of revenge and wickedness all because they used her as a method to take away the people she mattered most.
Elphaba has fully embraced the role of the wicked witch as the film veers towards its conclusion, seeking revenge against Dorothy by trapping her and Toto in a cellar and taking her prisoner. She is in a spiral of grief and rage and is not thinking straight. Only when she gets that letter from Fiyero, she realizes what she must do to see him again and lets that act drop. To Elphaba, it is a suicide mission. She must fake her death, make all of Oz think the wicked witch has been disposed of like every common fairytale and then flee to a place far from Oz just as the animals had planned to do in order to reunite with Fiyero. Her sacrifice was born out of love, not only for Glinda or Fiyero, but to right the wrongs of her past, to give herself happiness after years of being shunned. She can live in a world now without regrets or indifference with every soul believing she's dead because as the wizard had said, folks will believe anything even if it's a lie because it will be history. Just as the wizard of oz story was told, just as the death of the wicked witch will be passed on from days to come.
[Fiyero talking to Elphaba after ALAYM]
Elphaba: If you even DARE to go with me, I will kill you
Fiyero: I wasn't going to, but since you've asked so nicely....
Elphaba: [sighs] that was a THREAT, NOT A REQUEST!

I say this as someone who loves Fiyerba, Gelphie, and Gliyeraba, I don’t like how some Gelphie only fans try to downplay or erase Fiyero, not all of them thankfully, but enough where it is hard for me to enjoy it. I won’t deny that Elphaba and Glinda is not platonic or really not strictly platonic especially if you read the novel where they have kissed and lay in the same bed together. But Fiyero is also Elphaba’s lover and in the novel the father of her child. Yet I get my post where I was having a poll where I said at some point in my life when I get some fics done, I wanted to do an Wicked Adamsapple AU that is Fiyerba and I was figuring out who I wanted to be who. I got comments saying that I had to make it Gelphie with Adam as Glinda and Lucifer as Elphaba. If you want to do that yourself, fine, but I said I wanted to do it with Fiyerba. This might come from the fact that even though I do love Elphaba with Fiyero, Glinda, or both, I will admit I have a slight preference for Elphaba with Fiyero. Probably because in the musical, the version I like the most, Glinda chose her political career over Elphaba and Fiyero chose Elphaba over his own life. I also don’t think that makes me homophobic because I have a preference of Fiyerba over Gelphie. Also this is my headcanon sexualities for the three of them.
Elphaba: she is 100% bisexual in all adaptations of Wicked.
Glinda: bisexual in the musical/musical movie, but she is a lesbian in the novel.
Fiyero: straight in the novel and musical, but he is 100% pansexual in the musical movie because Johnathan Bailey’s Fiyero was seducing everyone during Dancing Through Life.
Chapter 2 of "Two Nickels" is now live!
"Waving Through A Window" on AO3
In which Fiyero has had enough a specific student slandering Elphaba (4700ish words).
ALSO A HUGE THANK YOU to @kirrtash for the new story cover! and to @lostinfantasyworlds for once again braving my typo ridden draft to help.
Working on my plan for my fic about Fiyeraba’s girl going to Shiz and meeting Glinda’s daughter 👀 This fic is going to be so interesting to work on, with the plan I have in mind for it especially. I’m so excited for you guys to see what I’m coming up with! 🫶
