“Her Body and Other Parties”
First post of the blog!!
This book is by the author Carmen Maria Machado. It is a culmination of different stories of fictional women who are going to grief, self discovery, surviving, fear, etc. Every story is so unique and left either shocked, emotional, angry, or content. The stories emphasize the violence taken upon women’s bodies whether it is self inflicted or forced upon by outside forces.Â
I recommend this book because I think there is at least one story in here that someone can either relate to or learn from. While I read it, I felt like I could look at my life as a story like the ones of these fictional women and I see and understand things that I didn’t before. I learned about the connection of my body and my mind and how they are odds with each other. I learned that no matter how many times you deny yourself from another person, they will always feel entitled to a part of you.Â
I really liked that the stories were so different from each other and that there are parts where you are literally left with your jaw hanging. I loved that not every story has a likable protagonist but there is a bit in every character that I can relate to. There really isn’t anything I didn't like that I can think of at the moment.
I’d rate this book 5 hearts! <3
