“Danny Wilson was the first gig I ever went to during my first month of A Levels at the University of East Anglia who, I discovered a couple of months ago, have an excellent archive of all the gigs they’ve ever held. I can therefore tell you with absolute certainty that it was on 8th October 1989 and cost me a whole six pounds. That concert was in support of their second album and their hit at the time, The Second Summer Of Love, but I’d been a fan since this one, their debut from 1987. . Danny Wilson (named after a Frank Sinatra film) were part of a Scottish renaissance of bands in the late 80s – Deacon Blue, Hue and Cry, Fairground Attraction (part-Scots). They were musically and lyrically literate, and this is a well-crafted album exhibiting a wide variety of styles yet nestling comfortably in that chamber-pop kind of genre. They eventually (after the third attempt) had a big big hit with Mary’s Prayer. It’s a great song, a classy catchy story-song back when we still had ‘proper’ songs in the UK Top 40 before Madchester and house music took over...” .
