So i actually get this question a lot and im sorry for everyone because i promise that i would make a list of all the anime i have watch and i keep forgetting. 

but like i said ill try to give you a few off the top of my head that i think everyone should watch. I wish i can separate them in categories or genre but i usually dont care about wat genre a anime is. If its entertaining and keeps my interest ill watch it. 

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. You can try and watch the original but brotherhood stays with the manga story and its better. 

Ano hi mita hana no namae o bokutachi wa mada shiranai (Ano Hana for short) If you feel like watching a story about friends and then cry a lot. Like alot!! 

Ano natsu de matteru Another love anime but with aliens. lol Its actually a nice good story. 

Ao no exorcist Half demon with a sword fighting monsters and going to secret school for exorcist. …the usual. 

Boku wa tomodachi ga sukunai bunch of friendless people make a club to make friends. 

eureka seven giant mech robot love story with a surfer type vibe to it. 

high school of the dead zombies,boobs, guns, boobs, zombies, boobs, story. SUPER FAN SERVICE WITH GORE SERVICE 

Hyouka funny beautiful looking anime. 

Mirai Nikki A game about killing people to become god using your cellphones. ….oh and a crazy bitch who will murder everyone for you because of love

At last my favorite anime so far to date is the Monogatari series its actually several seasons with each season being name different but google monogatari and you will find each one. its a smart and beautiful anime about vampire ghost and other supernatural things with out all the supernatural vibe.
