I have a reoccurring theme in dreams that popped up again last night—the forgotten aquarium.
I find that I have forgotten or didn’t know I had a (usually very large) aquarium somewhere in my house. There are always fish surviving in the algae-covered gloom.
Sometimes it’s a whole undiscovered room of a house I’ve moved into, floor to ceiling tanks with exotic and feral fish. Hard to know where to start, other than to crack open the dusty cans of fish food.
Once it was a whole zoo-sized aquarium complex that was on my property, with half empty tanks of sharks, and tropical fish, and crocodiles that I had to figure out how to care for.
Sometimes it’s a tank know to be mine, but which I’ve forgotten about. Set into a wall, under a sink, shoved into some unused space, hungry, abandoned fish lurking inside.
Last night it was a second betta that I had totally forgotten about. The tank started out small, but expanded to a huge tank with plants sprouting in the corners, and that took up half my living room floor.
It’s a weirdly specific theme, and I wish I understood its implications better.
