Married Military Members - Shit Out of Luck

With all the excitement and hype surrounding “trend-worthy” topics, GOP politics, and the constant talk of terror suspects, it seems as though many other serious issues fall through the cracks due to lack of public awareness. The Senate Armed Services Committee has inserted language in its version of the fiscal 2016 defense authorization bill, which will directly impact dual-military married couples. The threat of debt and government spending in the United States has been ongoing for years and although many political leaders have proposed new ways to cut spending or prospectively save money, the lack of productive outcomes has yet to be seen.

Where is the money being spent and where are we actually going to cut spending?
Much of the public is unaware of the efforts, ideas, and bills that are being introduced, implemented, and fully passed by our government. If the new language inserted into the Senate-proposed bill passes, our military soldiers suffer the consequences. The Senate bill, in both circumstances of having dependents or not, would allow only the higher-ranking member in any dual-service marriage to draw on any BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing). This means the other spousal military member would be deemed ineligible for BAH. Meanwhile, those who are married to a civilian may still earn BAH while their spouse is free to earn as much as they want – therefore, only dual-military married couples are directly affected.
Our married military couples already forfeit much of their “normalcy” in regards to marriage and their everyday lives and our government is now targeting them simply because they share the same boss – Uncle Sam. Is this how we support budget cuts in this country? Do we take from those who defend our land and fight for our freedoms only to continue to spend on the physical demands of having an actual high-functioning military?
Petitions are currently in place to stop the bill before it passes. Surely there are other departments, accounts, and seemingly wasteful areas of our government spending, which could be cut or re-evaluated instead. Much of the country is struggling financially as the cost of living has gradually increased while incomes have reached a minimal plateau. Without public awareness of such discrepancies in spending and budget cuts, we are all at risk, including our dutiful military members.
