Sofia from Young & Hungry has become a very meaningful character for me to watch. She probably is the character I can relate to most that I’ve seen both on television and in cinemas. And here are the reasons why:
1. The Way Her Being Latina Is Shown
I am Latina but I’m only a quarter Puerto Rican. Throughout my life, I have struggled with a cultural identity. I look very Hispanic but I didn’t grow up with the culture. While her character obvious speaks Spanish and did grow up with the culture, it isn’t the main focus of her character. So many times in the media I see Latinas that are rich in their cultures and that is the main part of who they are. It’s nice to see a character that isn’t like that.
I have always loved seeing people who are from Florida on tv. It just gives me a nice feeling that I can’t quite explain.
While this doesn’t come up till later on in the show, as writing major I enjoyed watching someone discover that passion.
4. The Responsible Friend
Sophia is the shown to be the responsible one of the two main actresses on the show. She is the sensible one that is always trying to bring Gabby back to reality. This is who I am in my friend group. I am always the one that’s like “we probably shouldn’t do that because of (insert a realistic reason).” At the same time, she is very loving and compassionate towards Gabby and would do anything for her. This is the kind of friend that I strive to be.
While I am much shyer that Sofia, she still is a character that I feel the most connected to. All these things that make her who she is are also the things that make up who I am. It’s nice to feel represented in a show that has helped me throughout my first semester of college. I would just like to thank Aimee Carrero for portraying this character so beautifully.
