What would happen if Hawke really did not want the first night, out of fear for Fenris' wellbeing, and refused?
Well that's a bit too theoretical and rhetorical for me...
Fenris's romance was written this way, and his trauma and ensuing development are essential to it. The entire plot is pretty much based on it!
Without that plot point what would we have? The Veilguard therapy talks? Calm and measured discussions about feelings and doubts? Slowly processing it through scheduled sessions?
I'm not sure I'd appreciate it.
With his tragic story Fenris pretty much reaches into your chest and literally touches your heart and makes you feel all the pain and anguish that go with it, and that's why it is so powerful. That's why the payoff to seeing it to the end is so gratifying and fullfilling.
And Hawke may not have wanted that night to happen the way it did, but he also did not want to deny Fenris what he wanted at that time. Refusing his move when Fenris is still learning to be his own person and to make his own choices does not seem like a good idea to me. At all.
Sometimes you just go along with whatever a person dear to you is doing, even though you don't share their certainty, but you choose to stick with them and let them have what they want because it's the best you can do to support them. Or so it seems, at least.
That's why my Hawke wouldn't ever refuse him. He wants to show his willingness to stick with Fenris through whatever he chooses to do.
