When Fiona’s hands dart for his collar, Rhys wonders–not for the first time, either–if he’s finally pissed her off enough to get himself murdered.
So his initial response of yelping and trying to step back feel pretty stupid in retrospect when, instead, she smiles wryly and starts fixing his tie for him. The relief only lasts a moment or two; then he realises that she has absolutely no idea how to “fix” anything he’s wearing.
“Oh, whoa–whoa, whoa, no. No.” He covers her hands with his own, but when she scowls he reflexively lets go of her; physicality is still weird between the two of them. (Frankly, it’ll probably always be weird.)
Fortunately, she releases his tie in turn, after a brief pause. “Sorry, I guess.”
Rhys’ throat clenches guiltily. Sure, he’s not really used to receiving affection or concern from Fiona, but it occurs to him that she’s probably not used to giving it, either.
“It’s… supposed to sit like that,” he reassures her, lamely. When she doesn’t react, his brain activates nervous-mode and his big mouth just has to fill the silence with something stupid. “It’s called fashion, okay?”
That brings back the smirk he’s used to seeing.
