- I kept clear of reading too much about the film until I’d basically done it and it turns out that a lot of the things I’d been turning over in my own mind w.r.t. the film were things which had been issues/decisions during production: e.g. do you end on sidney getting arrested or do you end on susie getting free? Turns out the director wanted to end with Susie, and Burt Lancaster wanted to end with Sidney. And I thought a lot about how Sidney is always moving, always pacing, and JJ is totally still - and it turns out that was specifically written/directed; I guess what I’m saying is SSOS is quite INSISTENT, there’s so much going on under the surface that any idea I had was in fact something that was in the film already.
