PRORA (2012) Post 1 of 2
Short Film
Directed By: Stéphane Riethauser
TOM GRAMENZ (as Jan)
&
SWEN GIPPA (as Matthieu)
Synopsis: Two best friends one harboring a crush on the other invade the PRORA (A deserted former Nazi holiday camp and communist military complex) after partying all night. Something happens that could forever alter there friendship.
My Review: This movie was an oxymoron for me. I loved it but hated it. These two friends are from different countries but there is no explanation as to their friendship. Are they best friends or friends that just met. Matthieu is presumably heterosexual talking about all he wants to do with a woman.
Inside the Prora they rough housing and breaking windows. Jan gets Matthieu on the floor and holding him down as a part of their rough housing. They look at each other and Jan kisses Matthieu (who is stunned perhaps but doesn't try to stop the encounter)
As Jan continues kissing Matthieu, Matthieu kind of half heartily participates even helping Jan take off his shirt...the camera pans off of them but it's clear something is transpired. Then back to the room Jan is off sitting alone while Matthieu lies on the floor buckling his belt.
No conversation and Matthieu gets up to leave as Jan follows. When Jan touches Matthieu he responds in anger and soon punches Jan. He falls cutting his leg severely on glass on the floor as Matthieu escapes.
So much unexplained stuff here. Jan is seriously hurt and he and Matthieu are the only people there so how did he get help (you later see he has stitches in his leg)
So we see Jan sitting alone on the beach all stitched up and Matthieu arrives and sits next to him and no words are spoken for the rest of the film. It's clear that they have forgiven one another but would've been nice to hear a conversation.
That being said I enjoyed this movie. I'd say it's a must watch. Available on YouTube and Gagaoolala
