Pos and Dave from rap legends De La Soul return as alter egos First Serve with a new concept album.
First Serve, First Serve (2012)
Two thirds of De La Soul – Kelvin ‘Posdnuos’ Mercer and David ‘Trugoy’ Jolicoeur – combine with French production duo Chokolate and Khalid for a party rap record detailing the arc of a fictional hip-hop band making it big in the 1990s. There is undeniable appeal to First Serve, the usual DLS wordplay, hooks, catchy beats and general amenability, but the corny kids’ TV-esque sheen keeps me from repeat listens.Â
