Jet Martinez’s “Des-Colores” at First Amendment Gallery.

Opening Saturday, October 5th, 2019 at First Amendment Gallery in San Francisco, California is artist Jet Martinez’s solo exhibition, “Des-Colores.”

For “Des-Colores” (an opposing take on the Mexican folk song, “De Colores”), Martinez departs from his familiar multi-colored realm to confront a world riddled with loss, and the cognitive dissonance between creating work that aims to be beautiful and uplifting in the midst of natural devastation. Using a monochromatic palette becomes the point of departure to reflect on the rapid degradation of the Earth’s natural systems; Martinez uses his visual language to not only acknowledge the perpetual mourning we face as a society but to question our compliance in the removal of Nature, Love, and Color from an otherwise vibrant existence.

The exhibition will be on view until October 25th, 2019.

Stacey Rozich’s “Some Sort of Disrepair” at First Amendment Gallery.

Opening Saturday, July 6th, 2019 at First Amendment Gallery in San Francisco, California is artist Stacey Rozich’s solo exhibition, “Some Sort of Disrepair.”

In her inaugural solo show at First Amendment Gallery, Rozich expands her mythologies of the past decade; the collection of works mine the soul-searching and emotional depths we confront in our quietest moments, whether it be a moment of solitude or the darkest hour of nighttime. The figures that lurk in the shadows of our consciousness appear shrouded in billowing, intricately patterned garments to reflect our desire to reshape our personal experiences. Highly ornate structures and lush botanicals act as the backdrop for these scenarios to reveal themselves as an altered reality imbued with a dreamlike quality. The masked characters, a hallmark of Rozich’s work for the past decade, has expanded to explore these intimate circumstances in her signature storybook narrative. Juxtaposing her delicate, yet precise use of watercolor with dense layers of gouache, Rozich constructs vignettes that combine elements of folklore, medieval religious iconography and American pop culture– all mingling together like guests in a cocktail party fever dream.

Henry Fey’s “Potholes” at First Amendment Gallery.

Currently on view at First Amendment Gallery in San Francisco, California is artist Henry Fey’s solo exhibition, “Potholes.”

For “Potholes,” Fey uses his signature blend of digital and analog processes to simulate a visual journey of a casual ride through a cityscape. Individually, the works recall innocuous colors and textures that seamlessly flow into another to then be punctuated by abrupt darkness - a pothole that only disrupts your journey momentarily before sending you back on track. Collectively, these examinations recontextualize familiar forms with the framed works acting as windows into particular moments of that ride.

The  exhibition will be on view until June 28th, 2019.

Rachel Hayden’s “Please Hold” at First Amendment Gallery.

Opening on Friday, March 8th, 2019 at First Amendment Gallery in Oakland, California is artist Rachel Hayden’s solo exhibition, “Please Hold.”

This new body of work is inspired by universal emotions and symbols, including the hands and the sensation of touch, the moon, rain, sweat, and tears. Hayden communicates in clear and concise imagery to evoke an empathetic understanding of each thematic inclusion, a nod to her employment as an early childhood educator at an art museum.

“Please Hold” will be on view until March 29th, 2019.

Bagger43′s “Serene” at First Amendment Gallery.

Opening on Saturday, October 6th, 2018 at First Amendment Gallery in San Francisco, California is artist Bagger43’s solo exhibition of a two part series of paintings entitled, “Serene.”

In the first section, the artist has painted a collection of fictional landscapes. The pieces were made as a meditation on the theme of serenity and calm, inspired by an imagined version of nature. The second section contains portraits made with a less deliberate theme in mind, connected only by their lax nature and the fact that they were all primarily painted at night or in the early morning.

Centering around the two themes allows the work to be cathartic while portraying the concept without dedicating itself too much to exact representation at the expense of conveying the theme. These paintings represent a certain freedom from reproducibility in that sense and remain true to Bagger’s ideal forms of serenity and relaxation.

The exhibition will be on view until November 9th, 2018.

“Less is More: Exploring Mindfulness and Conscious Consumption,” A Temple Children Exhibition.

Opening on Friday, August 10th, 2018 at First Amendment Gallery in San Francisco, California is the group exhibition curated by Temple Children entitled, “Less is More: Exploring Mindfulness and Conscious Consumption.”

“Less Is More” opens dialogue surrounding hyper-consumption as a dominant driver of environmental degradation and climate change. This experiential collection navigates between the macro and micro, highlighting the myriad effects that individualistic decisions have on our our planet’s fragile natural resources and ecosystems.

Temple Children is an experimental arts and sustainability platform uniting a diverse global community of creatives to generate collaboration for positive change. In search of a collective consciousness, this dedicated group challenges us to look inward and recognize the interconnectedness between human beings and our environments.

The exhibition will feature exclusive works and sculptures by Askew One, Meggs and Jessie x Katey plus works from Aaron Glasson, Cory Martin, Cryptik, Ellen Rutt, Emad Rashidi, Jet Martinez, Jonny Alexander, Kai Kaulukukui, Lauren YS, Matthew Eaton, Ouizi, Patrick Ethen, Paul Johnson, Rick Hayward & MIMI, Sam Yong, Thing Thing, Wooden Wave and Yoskay Yamamoto.
