Could Dragons be hybrids of wyverns and firewyrms?
It is interesting that wyverns look like dragons (both reptiles with wings and two legs) but donāt breathe fire, whereas firewyrms are reptiles that donāt have wings but do breathe fire. And according to TWOIAF, in his book Dragons, Wyrms, and Wyverns: Their Unnatural History, Septon Barth speculated that the bloodmages of Valyria created dragons from wyvern stock.
However, the fact that his theory does not mention firewyrms would argue against that hybrid idea. (Or at least Yandel doesnāt say that Barth mentioned firewyrms in his theory.) The other major argument against hybridization (and against Barthās theory) is that dragons existed before the rise of Valyria, which is known both textually and per GRRMās own āthere were dragons all over, onceā. So I would doubt it, sorry. And please see this post for more.
Sooooo what if firewyrms and dragons come from the same eggs but prior to their hatching, the eggs are given magic enchantments to make them hatch as dragons a opposed to wyrms, and that knowledge was lost w the dragonmasters and older Targaryens being killed during the Dance (and like the younger targs hadnāt learned yet)
And the reason Danyās eggs did hatch was because they were somehow enchanted/magicked before they were stolen from dragonstone before the dance OR because part of the incubatory magic includes a fire sacrifice and she just happened to get that part right
Then if the eggs arenāt dealt with properly before hatching, you get either firewyrms like the egg that hatched to Laena Velaryon or at least extremely stunted dragons with shriveled wings that resemble wyrms (like the last dragon that died in 153), maybe thatās why it was said that magic started to die out with the dragons because the dragons themselves would not exist without it
