In the cold night air of a desert far off a pup stared up into an alien star filled sky. This young pup was mostly known by most as Lasair, full name Lasair Nios Lu; or the emperorâs handicapped son. The cool night air gently blowing through the sand dunes of the desert beyond sent shivers down the pupâs back. The sun wouldnât rise for another long hour or so which left the tired child to stare off into the world beyond his fatherâs control. A world of peace to his young mind. A world filled with adventures yet to be had.
Childhood of hero> Intro to character- Lasair Nios Lu, or Nios for short is a very small pup compared to his multiple brothers. His oldest brothers of more than eight years, Fahri, Ahrie and the all too intelligent Taura all seemed to ignore Nios as if he were a simple commoner on the streets. Nios did not mind the constant disregard of his brothersâ attention. It simply meant that he had less to worry about as his other brothers were often a threat to his own wellbeing.
(should I include the brotherâs descriptions here?)
Fahri- The first born, Fahri was very similar to his father. They were mean tempered and cruel hearted. They were extremely judgmental though they judged themselves more than any other as their fatherâs expectations were overbearing and high. His training to take over the familiesâ empire takes up most of his time. Nios never truly had to deal with his eldest brother due to this. Whenever they did interact, which was rare, there would be nothing but harsh comments and hate filled glares.
Ahrie- The eldest twin, Ahriye is the informant in training to Niosâ father. They do not hold hatred towards their younger brothers but they do judge them and push them towards their own goals. Nios has never had a truly pleasant experience with this brother though he never has experienced anything overwhelmingly destructive either.
Taura- the younger twin , Taura
The second rank of brothers however, Fihr, Furaha, Cenek and Chiameka enjoyed in all of Niosâ dismay to play tricks and torment the poor sole. Cenek being the worst of the group, according to the pup when he complained to his mother, as Cenek was relentlessly aggressive with his pranks. Once Nios had fallen victim to a prank that ended with his paw caught between a sharp piece of sand stone and a line of barbed wire wrapped around a plank of wood. Those wounds caused him plenty of problems in his future as he had problems maneuvering his fingers properly from that point on.
Fihr-
Furaha-
Cenek-
Chiameka-
The group of brothers only two years older than Nios were the worst, he admitted, as his father had actually instructed them to try and âilluminate himâ from his palace. These brothers were Sango, Seonag and the extremely slippery Sonau. Poor las had to learn right from the start how to avoid this bundle of older brothers to stay alive. He only ever found refuge from the torments of his older brothers when he ran to his motherâs side. This would in turn earn him, by Cenek- the nickname âmommaâs boyâ.
Sango-
Seonag-
Sonau-
Luckily for Lasair he had two brothers the same age as himself. Folcher and Philokrates commonly known as Cemi due to the markings on his face. Nios never found peace exactly with these two brothers. But he never had quarrels leading to his own injuries either. In fact he quite enjoyed the company of Cemi, who was often getting himself into trouble with his studies professors.
Though his brothers were cruel Nios would have to argue that his father was sadistic. Fuer Gott the great emperor of the western desert constantly showed his hatred for his youngest son. Niosâ mother, Blume-Feuer had only one reason to give to her son as to why he hated him so much.
âYou have no fire, my boy.â She started a tinge of sorrow in her voice.
âFirewolves need to have fire to be royal blooded. Without that wisp of a flame there is no way you could truly be royal. You are the only one of your many siblings that has not been born burning hot. That is why he hates you.â
Call to adventure- Folcher, the oldest of the three pups slammed open the darkened door way to the roof of the shortest tower in the right wing. Nios nearly leapt off of the side of the open topped tower surprised by the sudden slam of the door as his grinning brother entered. It was still extremely dark out though the double moons in the sky did illuminate the twinkling white sands beyond.
âShi- Folcher!â Nios hissed gripping onto the cold yellow sand stone he had perched himself onto with shaking hands.
âYou scared the living daylights out of me!â
âOh hush it, Las.â Folcher hissed in a mock angered voice as he walked over to the edge leaning over to see the four yard drop to the sand below. He was still grinning like a mad man.
âYouâre gonna get us caught if you keep being so loud.â
âLoud?â Nios hissed swinging his leg back over onto solid ground.
âYouâre the one slamming doors!â
âShhh!â Folcher pressed his soft palm against Lasairâs yellow muzzle. Both pups turned their head slowly to the desert; the silent mounds of sand shifted effortlessly in the cool wind.
âWhat took you so long?â Nios asked in a quiet voice, his silver blue eyes staring off into the sea of black and white.
âI couldnât wake Cemi up, had to pack everything myself.â Folcher replied pulling off a large red and gold bag and setting it on the ground besides Niosâ leg with a soft thunk.
âEverythingâs in there.â He continued giving the bulky bag a quick nudge with his paw. Nios walked over to the bag hesitantly opening the ruffled top only to fall backwards when Furahaâs angry desert runner leapt out of the bag at him. The angry bird about half a foot tall with sandy white feathers screeched and hissed at the young firewolf with all the mite of a tiger.
âYou didnât bind him?â Nios hissed racing to grab the bird before it could dart off into some dark corner of the castle.
âI couldnât find any string.â Folcher replied cutting the bird off from the door. Both pups leapt landing with a muffled crunch on top of the terrified bird. Folcher wrestled the bird still shrieking back into the red and gold bag.
âWay to go, Folch.â Nios muttered in an annoyed tone as he snatched the bag from the panting brother.
âItâs not my fault I couldnât find any of motherâs yarn. Yâknow she treasures that stuff like dad treasureâs his gold.â Folcher scoffed back crossing his arms over his chest. Nios rolled his eyes and chucked the bird, bag and all, over the short tower sending it plummeting down into the sand.
âIs Cemi ever gonna show up?â He groaned throwing a shaky leg over the side again.
âWith our luck, heâll bring the entire family guard with him.â Folcher murmured in reply as he stuck a paw into a crevice on the outside of the short tower to begin climbing down.
âHe better hurry up.â Nios chuckled softly as he lowered himself down to a crevice for his paw. Just then a crashing sound echoed from the staircase. Nios peaked over the side of the tower to see his brother Philokrates tumble out of the doorâs opening.
âIâm here! I- Iâm here!â He barked exasperated from his journey through the hallways over to the tower.
âFeckin took you long enough.â Folcher called from half way down the tower. Cemi rushed over to the edge staring down at his two brothers already making their way down the side of the towers to the bag with the bird.
âWait for me!â Cemi called swinging his leg over the side. The otherâs groaned sarcastically at the sight of their brotherâs tail.
Crossing of first threshold- Once the brothers were on the ground Nios raced to the squirming bag hoisting the fabric over his shoulder. He took a long look at the nearly glowing sand. The wind had seemed to pick up now that they were all on the ground.
âWe should get moving.â Cemi hummed nervously. Nios looked back at his brother and let out a hissing laugh.
âOr what? Weâll be eaten by sand worms?â He added in a scratchy high pitched voice. Cemi shivered and Folcher started forwards. Nios wouldnât admit it but he was grateful that his brother took the lead. The small group of three crept away from the massive mansion and into the desert which lead to the great cities their father ruled over. Nios wouldnât miss the warmth of the mansion filled with his brothers, blind servants and parents that didnât care for him. He was grinning with glee wandering the desert dragging his paws in the soft cool desert sands. He was only partially disturbed by the weak croaking coming from the bag as the bird exhausted itself.
Cemi kept close to Niosâ side as they walked. He was constantly glancing back at the slowly shrinking castle they were leaving. He wasnât used to running off of the property even when it came to vanishing from his professors.
âLas. . . â He started when they were half way into the desert.
âWhat. . . What if Fuer sees that we have left?â
Nios kept quiet suddenly feeling sick. He tightened his grip around the bag quickening his pace into the desert. Folcher scoffs loudly spinning round to face Cemi.
âCome on baby boo!â He barks as loudly as he could. Cemi blushes glancing away from him.
âHeâs not gonna bother sending anyone out after us!â He snickers turning back and pointing out the dim lights of the city.
âCome on then you two! Letâs just forget about him.â He snorts bending over and taking a sprinters stance.
âWe need to get to town, donâtâ we?â
âFolcher- I donât want to race. You know Iâm not a fast runner.â Cemi whines walking up to his brothers side. Folcher simply smiled back wagging his tail as he waited for Cemi to take the same stance. Nios rolled his eyes continuing to walk past them. He did not have any interest in these sorts of games and his brothers knew it.
âFolcher- why?â Cemi whined bending over into the same stance. Neither had time to right themselves as Nios shouted at the top of his lungs-
âGo!â This sent both brothers stumbling forwards past Nios and towards the city. Nios muttered something before dashing off after them. He stayed at a pained jog staying well behind his sprinting brothers. The city crept up quickly showing the absolute glory of its existence.
Houses sat close to each other more than four stories tall each. Most building were shops and city stores cozied up under the living places of their owners. The streets were paved here with hard grey stones though terribly do to the sands. The parts that werenât buried were cracked and turning to rubble do to the blistering heat of the morning sun. Signs hung everywhere glowing brightly shouting with all of their neon might
âCome in!â or
âOpen!â
There were even a few signs hung outside buildings with a weak red glow of,
âClosed.â
Hero as warrior>Road of trials- Â Nios stopped just outside of the city gasping and heaving to try and catch his breath. His brothers, Philokrates and Folchar lay in the sand allowing the cold sands to work their way under their silky fur. Folcher coughed out a laugh between his gasps. He could just barely sit himself upright to look an irritated Nios in the eyes.
       âCome off it Lassy boy-â
âDonât call me that.â Nios interrupted with a very stern glare that mimicked his fathers. His ice blue eyes were stunning in this dim lighting. Folcher shivered silently for a moment before continuing.
âNios, you gotta get into a sport or something. Itâs not healthy to be huffin and puffin like that.â He mocked breathing heavily himself. Cemi, arms stretched out above his head in the sand ignored them completely.
âWoah there sparky.â Folcher chuckled getting to his knees. Nios wasnât going to let it slip that he actually did have an interest in the sport of swimming. The looks on the faces of the athletes after leaping into the waters and winning mile long races felt intoxicating to him. He felt so jealous, so curious as to what swimming in water would be like.
âCome on guys.â Nios sighed standing back up once he had finally caught his breath. He peaked into the bag only to quickly close it up again as the bag began to flail around in his hands.
âHopefully we can get to the butchers place before the sun rises.â Cemi finally groaned standing up from his spot in the sand. He reached down and pulled Folcher up right after him. Nios nodded to Cemi before they continued down the sand covered road swimming in and out of the glowing lights of the signs.
It took them awhile as the city was quite large, to navigate through the streets down to the butcherâs home. Nios couldnât hide his wide grin as heâd finally be getting his revenge on his four older brothers, Fihr, Furaha, Cenek and Chiameka. This entire plan had been created by Nios and he knew it would hit the older brotherâs hearts hard. This desert runner, which all four of his older brothers took care of and kept as a pet, would end up a small breakfast meal for the three youngest pups.
âI wonder- since the little beast is so mean, will he taste spicy?â Nios asked throwing the bag onto the open counter of the butcherâs store.
âDonât be ridiculous, Las. Itâll probably be the driest and stringiest piece of meat youâll ever try.â Folcher replied with a snigger. Folcher walked over to the counter pulling out a fistful of small gold and silver coins from his short grey jacket pocket. Cemi chuckled and rang the press-bell on the counter to get the attention of the now very sleepy ad irritable butcher.
âArg, whatâdây want?â Came an older gruff voice as a broadly built silver grey cat came into view behind the counter. Niosâ ears flicked backwards and he ducked shyly behind Folcher who smacked at the wriggling bag. He had been practicing this shy boy attitude for years now- He wasnât about to let up his act now.
âWeâve brought you a bird to prepare. . . Itâs still alive- I hope that doesnât matter.â Folcher hummed in the politest tone he could manage. The cat butcher stared down at the three pups wiping his paws on a brown and white cloth.
âNahh, thâliving bird wonât be materin to me.â He replied eyeing the pups with a suspicious glare. He set the rag away and pulled the bag towards himself prying the opening open. His eyes widened and the bag shut as quickly as it had opened as the butcher muttered something in cat.
âThis beasty is ta most irritated lookin bird Iâve eva seen.â He murmured in a tired sigh. He took the bag and turned to head back into the dark back rooms of his butchery.
âCan we get the head back too?â Cemi called after him leaning on the counter. Folcher rolled his eyes while Nios let out a loud chuckle. He found the idea of leaving his older brotherâs the severed head of their prized bird extremely amusing. After all- they had done the same to him with his pet mouse. They had said that theyâd fed it to their motherâs long legged deep brown desert cat do to some odd mistake Nios had no recollection of committing.
ââCourse.â The butcher replied vanishing into the back room. The boys stood at the counter eyeing each other in silence as they listened to the sounds that came from the back room. They could hear as the bird was pulled from the bag, the screeches dull from behind the walls echoed down the short hall. Folcher and Cemi jerked upright in sickened surprise as the butcher slammed his heavy butchering blade down on the birdâs neck. Cemi almost retched as it happened again and a low crunch came with it. Folcher shifted nervously in his spot counting out his gold coins and pushing the silver ones into the next pile.
âDo you think weâre doing the right thing?â Cemi asked in a quieted voice.
âPhilokrates- of course you are.â Came a sudden low voice from behind them all. All three of the boys spun around to face one of their oldest brothers Ahriye. Folcherâs breath caught in his throat as he saw the brightly colored informant of his fatherâs.
       âWh-wâ
âWhat am I doing here? Fuer-Gott asked me to follow you three from the castle. He wanted to know what you could possibly be using your money on.â Ahriye replied in his nobble tone of voice. He flicked a piece of sand from his shoulder as he walked past the three youngest brothers.
âMurdering your brotherâs pet,  for what? A revengeful scheme?â He questioned as he picked up one of Folcherâs silver coins. Folcherâs mouth was agape as he tried to protest. Nios shivered stepping towards Cemiâs side.
âOh do not be so cowardly.â Ahriye muttered coldly, pressing the coin into his own pocket of his golden silk cloak.
âIâm not going to stop you, though your brotherâs will surely know who was responsible for their lost pet.â
Niosâ ears flattened against his head, brows low and tail twitching. The audacity of his brother made his temper flare. Yet he was not quite ready to act against his elder brother. No, that would take time and preparation to make his brother disappear as he was making the desert runner.
âAm I angering you, Lassy?â Ahriye asked in a mocking tone of voice.
âWhat will you do- Lassy boy?â
The two other siblings glanced quietly from Ahriye to Nios and back again. Nios clenched his fists into balls staring down his older brother.
âdonât be impulsive, Las- youâll have your chance. Just think.â He thought to himself as he glared daggers at the older sibling.
âitâs not like you can do anything to me. You have no fire magic.â He mocked, waving his hand around in a restrained manner causing the air to hiss and pop sparking to life a small ball of fire. Nios looked down and away from his older brother stepping further backwards against the cold wall of the butchers shop.
âHeh, just as I thought.â Ahriye muttered dropping his hand allowing the fire ball to dwindle and die before walking back down the darkened street. All three boys seamed to relax after the older brother vanished.
âThat was too feckin close.â Folcher gasped out, sliding down the counter onto his rump.
âWhat if Fuer had sent Fahri?â Cemi yipped, still shaking from the encounter of his older brother.
âH-he wouldnât dare send his replacement out into the city without an army to guard him.â Nios chuckled bringing his paws to his face to wipe away his terrified expression. It was a good act- he was getting better.
âyouâre right.â Cemi replied leaning on the counter as he relaxed. The butcher returned from the back room with a plucked and cleaned desert runner wrapped in a brown piece of paper. Folcher smiled at the sight.
âAnd the head?â Cemi asked as Folcher set the cleaned bird back into the bag.
âAh, yes. âere.â The butcher pulled the head of the bird from his now slightly blood splattered apron pocket. Nios snatched it from the butcherâs hand and shoved in into his warn sweaterâs pocket.
âFour gold coins should do it, ay?â Folcher asked as he pushed the shimmering coins towards the butcher. The cat stared down at the coins and quickly pulled them into his paw nodding to the group. Cemi lead the group of three out of the butcherâs shop and back into the slowly brightening streets of the city.
Once the group of three had made it back across the now warming sands of the desert into the cool shades of the castle they ran to the main kitchen. Folcher was the chef in the group taking the chicken and trying his hardest not to burn it over the square as the actual chef and his assistance worked on a miraculous breakfast for the older brothers and their parents. Nios had vanished into the lowly glowing hallways darting from corner to corner as he made his way into his siblings room. He crept up quickly to the side of their beds where they lay sleeping and tucked the birds head under their blanket before darting away back into the halls. Cemi met him there and they all met up to enjoy the cooked carcass of the cooked desert runner.
This only caused things to escalate. Pranks became full attempts on the lives of each brothers.
