Burning for you! (pt.1)
⧠au!firefighter!dean x small town!reader pt.2
â§they went to the same high school, he was a couple of years older. you left for college, he stayed. but now your back. and as luck would have it, you moved into an apartment right across the street from the fire station.
â§fluff, little bit of angst, double pov, use of y/n (nothing crazy in this one, setting it up for part 2...)

The DinerÂ
the bell on the door chimes as he steps into the diner. boots scuffed, soot still under his fingernails. it smells like coffee and grease, always the same, smells, people. he tips a nod to the waitress behind the counter, and then his eyes drift. almost un-intentionally, like they were being pulled against his own will. they land on the booth by the window.Â
they land on her.Â
she's sitting there. hair pulled up messy. in that lazy way girls do when they think no one is looking. a stack of resumes sit next to her on the table. a mug of half full coffee. her fingers drum lightly on the edge of the table. tapping to the beat of whatever was playing through the diner. her eyes looking out the window, like her mind was somewhere else.Â
dean almost didnât recognize her. almost.Â
she lifts the mug to her lips and laughs at something the waitress says as she passes by her table. and thats when it hits him. who she was. that girl with the camera. two grades below him. always lingering in the art room after school. and now she's across from him. all the same and yet entirely different. a little older. sharper around the edges.Â
he doesn't go up to her. doesn't say anything. he orders his coffee and takes it to go. slipping out the front door.Â
The Window
the sun has almost set. but the sky still glows with lingering traces of orange. summer days stretching long and hot. her apartment window is cracked open. the cool evening breeze flows through her room, stirring the curtains. she's curled up with her laptop, tweaking her resume. again. when red and white lights interrupt her train of thought.Â
she looks through the window.Â
thinking back to when she was looking for apartments. how she thought living across from a fire station couldnât be that bad. and then she sees him.Â
across the street. the door of the firetruck swings open. and he jumps out. broad shoulders, his gear clinging to him. he pulls off his helmet. soot smeared along his jaw like war paint. he drags his hand through his sweat soaked hair. laughing at something one of the other guys says. and she just watches.
worse. she remembers.
dean winchester. he was two grades ahead of her in high school. quarterback. loud. the kind of guy that you noticed wether you wanted to or not. she kept to herself back then. camera in hand. a little too shy, too serious. but she remembers him. remembers his old impala that used to sit in the school parking lot. the art classes she shared with his younger brother sam.Â
she hadnât expected him to still be here. but here he is. and heâs bigger now, broader. older in a way that makes her stomach twist.Â
and as if he can hear her thoughts, he turns. looks up. and their eyes meet thorough the window. she doesn't look away. doesnât pretend she wasnât looking.Â
and its the way her heart thumps in her chest when he dips his head in acknowledgement that has her mentally groaning.Â
One week laterâ Main Street Studios, Downtown
the bell above the door dings just as you are re-arranging a row of vintage film cameras. you glance up, expectingâŚanyone but him.Â
dean winchester.
heâs in his fire station t-shirt. short sleeves clinging to his firm biceps. work boots. cargo pants that hang just right on his hips. like he just got off call and hadn't changed yet. his eyes wandering around the shop. before they land on you.Â
âwell iâll be damnedâ he says with that oh so familiar grin. âi didnât know you were backâ. liar
you feel your pulse stumble. âdean winchester. wowâ you say forgetting about the film cameras you were arranging.Â
âwow huh?â he says, leaning against the counter. his arms crossed. easy, confident. âyou where what?- a sophomore when i was a senior?âÂ
you nod. âmhm something like thatâ you say, trying to keep your composure cool. âi had art class with sam. you used to wait for him outside, honk like a maniac till he came outâ
âgotta keep the kid humbleâ he says grinning. âso what brings you back? thought you went off to school somewhere fancy?â
you try not to think about the fact that heâs thought of you. and your failing. you shrug, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. âfinished up. thought iâd come back for a bit. homes still home you know?â
he nods, and gestures around the shop. âyou working here full time?â
âyeah, just started this weekâ you say. âthey needed help and i needed something steadyâ
and thats when you notice the folder in his hand. he places it on the counter across from you. âwell maybe you could help me out? weâre looking for someone to shoot our annual charity calendarâ firehouse fundraiser kind of thing. our usual guy flaked last minuteâ
you look down at the folder and flip it open. and you pick up the flyer inside. a rough mockup if what looks like a firemen of lawrence 2025 calendar. you raise your brow as you look it over.Â
dean smirks. âshirts optionalâ
you laugh as you shake your head. âwe have someone here who could probably take it on. the owners son, his names greg. iâm mostly doing storefront stuff right now.â
he hums. âpityâ
you tilt your head as you look up at him. âdidnât peg you as the calendar typeâ
he smiles. âitâs for a good cause. always up for a little bit of charity.â
âgood to knowâ you say with a smile, taking the flyer and typing a note into the computer for greg.Â
he lingers just a second longer before he starts to head for the door. but he turns around. âhey, random question. you the one who moved into the apartment across from the station? top floor. blue curtains?â
you blink. âyeah thatâs meâ
he nods, chuckles. âsmall world. thought that was you. lights are always on when we get back lateâ
âi don't sleep muchâ you admit.Â
âneither do weâ he says, pausing. âanyway. hopefully this works out. and maybe if your guy falls through you could step in. bet youâd do just fine behind the cameraâ
you raise an eyebrow. âyou offering to pose for me winchester?â
âiâd consider it community service, see you around y/nâ he says, shooting a wink your way. tipping his head as he heads out the door. the bell jingling behind him.Â
you can hear your heartbeat in your ears. you look down at the note you typed out for greg.
 and delete it.Â
Later that day
dean leans back in his chair at the station. sipping on a cup of coffee, when his phone buzzes.Â
1 New EmailÂ
Subject: âTomorrow- Calendar Shoot Confirmedâ
From: Main Street Studios
he blinked at the screen, clicking it open.Â
|Hey dean, tomorrow still good for the shoot? weâll send someone over around 10. Thanks again!|
âguess its happeningâ he says. spinning around in his chair, quickly replying to the email. benny walks past with a protein bar in his mouth.Â
âwhats happening?â he asks, half chewing.
âthe calendar. photoshoots on for tomorrowâ he says, smirk on his lips. âbetter start flexingâ
garth pops his head in from the rec room. âdid they say who was coming to take the pics?â
dean shrugs. âsome guy named greg i think. talked to the girl working the counter when i went in thoughâ. he hesitated a beat too long before he spoke next. just long enough for benny to catch it. âsame girl who moved in across the streetâ
benny raised a brow. âa cute girl?â
dean shrugs. trying to be nonchalant. âmaybeâ
benny chuckles, giving him a look. raising his eyebrows up and down, whistling at him. dean throws him a quick âshut upâ and he turns back towards the paperwork he was working on earlier.Â
yeah she was cute. no. not cute. pretty, she was pretty. too pretty maybe. not that he would mention that to the guys. same way he didnât mention how she smiled when she talked to him today. or the way he can't stop thinking bout it.Â
and he definitely didnât mention how he wished it would be her showing up with the camera tomorrow instead.Â
