the ring on your middle finger has been getting tighter by the hour, since you slammed your hand in your car door this morning. you had already been running late for work, already spilled your coffee, already tripped and fallen on your way to your car. you thought the bad luck was behind you when you made it to the office safely, until your hand was crushed by the door. you didn't think of taking the ring off until it was too late, and by the time you get back home, the finger is far too swollen.
you try it all, the floss method, icing your hand, olive oil, hell - you even try using the lube that's been in your drawer for longer than you even remember. but it's 9pm now, and nothing has worked.
fuck! you exclaim when the throbbing and the frustration become too much. after some googling, some texting a friend, and some desperation, you throw on some sweats and a hoodie, and start the walk to the nearest firehouse. it's ten blocks, not bad, and the walking helps blow some steam. it's not a warm night, but you keep a brisk pace to keep your temp up. and with the warmth radiating from your black and blue hand up your arm, you make due.
part of you expects the fire station to be empty, tending to some emergency around the city - or worse, be completely full of people who don't want to help. but instead you find something in between. the big garage door is open, the light is on, and there's just one guy sitting in a plush but ancient leather chair by the door. he's not doing much of anything, just writing in a worn journal, wearing all black, a small fire station logo embroidered on his shirt.
hi, excuse me you say in a small voice, much of your anger gone and replaced with embarrassment. he looks up, startled. his eyes take you by surprise, prettier than you thought, and looking right into yours. you shift back onto your heels, and clasp your hands together behind your back.
hey, what can i do for ya? he asks, standing up and tossing the notebook onto the seat. he has a scar going from his forehead to his cheek, crossing over his eye, and you almost want to ask how he got it, but you keep it to yourself.
so, this is super humiliating. but uh, you bring your left hand in front of you, holding it out to him a little. he takes a step closer, and looks down at it, then back up to you in concern. i can't get my ring off. i googled it, and apparently firefighters can help? but i totally don't want to bother y -
christ, that looks painful. it's no bother, i can help you. he waves off your sheepishness, gently putting his hand under yours, just barely holding it to inspect it further. did you walk here? he asks, as if just realizing you have no car with you.
yeah, i don't live far though you reply, shrugging and dropping your hand. he chuckles and shakes his head a little.
alright, wait here okay? i'll be right back. he instructs, and you obey, rocking back and forth on your feet while he disappears into the building. right when you're about to turn around and go home, not wanting to cause any problems, the man returns with some sort of device.
are you here all alone? you wonder aloud, finding it odd that it's so quiet.
no, two guys are on a call, one is sleeping upstairs. here, let's go back here where it's brighter. the still unnamed man explains, gesturing for you to follow him towards the back of the truck bay.
nice. i'm y/n, by the way you tell him, trying not to get flustered by the fact that you really didn't expect the person who helped you to be this....beautiful.
i'm anakin, nice to meet you. here, you can sit up here if you want he replies. anakin. he taps the countertop, and you hop up, feet dangling above the concrete floor.
is this gonna hurt? you ask, anxiety rising in your chest. your hand already hurts pretty bad, and the thought of it hurting worse, or possibly crying in front of this man is terrifying.
no ma'am, i promise. at the very least, it won't hurt worse than the pain i'm sure you're in already he says, a grimace on his face. honestly, i should tell you to go to the hospital, but i wanna help ya he admits, and you feel butterflies flutter in your stomach - now unable to meet his gaze.
i don't think it's broken you mumble, petulant.
well i do, so promise me you'll go after this. i'll call my ER friends and tell them to expect a pretty girl with a fucked up hand he requests, a mildly cocky look on his face. you open your mouth, then close it again, unsure of what to say, so you just nod your head. he picks up your hand, and you wince a little, both in pain and in fear. the device isn't terribly scary looking, but it is intimidating.
you've done this before? you ask as he gets half of the jaws between your finger and the ring.
tons of times, i promise it's going to be alright he reassures you, taking a moment to look up at you, and the expression in his eyes leaves you no choice but to trust him. one moment the ring is stuck, and the next, he grips your hand with one of his, and clamps down the cutter with the other, and the ring is broken. you exhale, a whole day's worth of tension and frustration leaving you in an instant.
that's so much better, thank you, anakin you breathe out, trying to flex your fingers as you finally feel the blood rushing back to your fingertip. two of your fingers won't bend, and the pain is still bad, but it's better.
no problem at all. i hope the ring wasn't too meaningful to you he says, handing you the broken jewelry.
it wasn't. it's just decorative, not an heirloom or anything. better to have the finger than the ring right you shrug, hopping down from the counter, making the height difference between the two of you much more noticeable.
what did you even do to screw up your hand that much? you don't scream 'wall puncher' to me he asks, leading the way back to the front of the building, where the chair is.
i slammed it in my car door on accident. i don't even know how it happened, i was in a hurry and it was really stupid you admit, figuring you don't have much to lose. there's no fake story for this injury that would make you seem cooler really anyway. he laughs loudly, then stops himself with a hand over his mouth, holding his other one out to you as a silent 'sorry for laughing'
oh jeez, sorry for laughing. i really thought it would be a better story, c'mon girl he says in faux disappointment, making you roll your eyes despite the grin on your face.
no you're right, it's really stupid. well, listen, thank you, seriously. i was extremely fed up trying to get that off at home. you tell him, stepping outside the building, putting another foot between the two of you.
it's all good. go to the emergency room please, that finger is 100% broken. he pleads
fiiiiiine you groan, leaning your head back, and he chuckles. you say one last goodbye, and start your walk home. you make it not even a block before hearing his voice behind you.
y/n! he exclaims, and you turn to see him jogging up to you, a small piece of paper in his hand
yeah?
let me know how the emergency room goes, okay? he smiles, a little bashful even - as he hands over the paper with his name and phone number scrawled onto it. you blush furiously, tucking the paper into your pocket.
i will you tell him, and he nods, satisfied with himself. on your walk home, you realize that maybe it wasn't bad luck that struck you that morning.
