The Reapers put priority focus on Benning because of its proximity to Arcturus, and its status as an important supply chain. Without access to the lush farmland and overabundance of food stores, the Alliance faces notable shortages that quickly spread throughout the fleet. Not to mention its proximity to the Charon relay make it an important asset to maintain control of the region.

However, Cerberus, the geth, and the rumored remnants of the Collectors also show a keen interest in gaining control of the colony. Alliance officials were at a loss to determine why the geth would show such intense interest in a single garden world, which is when they made an important discovery.

An abundant supply of magnetorhetium - a ferrofluid alloy composed of mercury, tungsten, iron, neodymium and boron – a key component for the manufacture of Thanix weaponry, can be found in the Riva Mountains bordering the main settlement of Izzo. The alloy is rare, because neodymium is a scarce but vital element that retains the magnetism required to accelerate molten metal used by Thanix cannons. Therefore its presence in conjunction with iron and boron makes it extremely convenient and cost effective to refine in one place, without relying on outside supply lines.

Because Thanix weaponry was a crucial component during the Reaper War, all factions sought the necessary materials needed to produce it – including the Reapers, who understood the advantage of having access to such an element. As a result, this colony represents a rare, unified front of cooperation. The Turian Hierarchy, the Salarian Union, the Asari Republic, and the Alliance have all contributed to the strip mining efforts underway.
