Several kilometres into a tunnel travelling deep under Mont Blanc, a truck driver noticed an unusual amount of drivers flashing their headlights at him as they passed in the opposite direction. Looking into his mirrors to try and catch a glimpse of the problem, he was alarmed to see white smoke billowing out of his truck from behind the cabin. Still, it was not an emergency yet -- many small truck fires had been put out by their driver with no hassle. He pulled over and climbed out, hoping to find a small fire, but almost immediately he was forced back as flames erupted from his truck’s cabin.

What originally looked like a small fire quickly grew to an inferno that killed 38 people. The tunnel was a catastrophic place for such a disaster: the ventilation system pushed toxic smoke along a huge stretch of the tunnel, displacing the oxygen and making escape impossible. To escape on foot meant to suffocate, and vehicle engines stalled due to lack of oxygen. The tunnel was too narrow for the many trucks to turn around, resulting in a queue of traffic being trapped behind the burning truck. The temperature of the fire rose to 1,000°C (1,830°F) and survivors, hiding in emergency rooms protected by fire doors set in the side of the tunnel, reported hearing rivers of burning fuel running down the road, popping tyres and exploding fuel tanks. 

For some, even the emergency rooms were not enough: the fire doors had been rated to survive for four hours at most; the fire burned for fifty-three. Of the fifty people trapped in the tunnel by the fire, only twelve survived. Due to the extreme heat, the bodies had been reduced to nothing but bones and ash, and the unrecognisable remains of the trapped vehicles had quite literally melted into the road.
