I read an article yesterday (March 21) that there's not really a point in widespread testing in parts of the US anymore, community spread is so common and PPE is in such short supply, better to use PPE to protect health care workers who are treating symptomatic people and everyone else stay home. I don't have enough information to rationally agree or disagree with their conclusion but it is still a scary thought.
It is a scary thought... I think widespread testing is more important in the early stages to keep an eye on where and why it is spreading. Yet if you stop testing you are kind of giving up. You don’t keep track anymore and just wait until everyone does have it. Of course testing isn’t the highest priority compared to treating people that are ill and staying at home is always the best prevention method. So you have to balance all these things at once.
Tests are also important to learn more about the disease itself. If you notice that it spreads far more easily than you thought and many are totally asymptotic, that is a very important information.
That said in Germany they don’t test everyone either. If you are at home anyway and you call your doctor they will tell you to stay at home and only test you if you insist. Otherwise they rather save the resources.
Because of course, you can only test if you have the means to do so. If you can decide between helping a person and testing them, helping them should be the priority.

Good job Germany! We on the other hand are just waiting for all hell to break lose. Tests are starting to be available. Not a lot but we no longer need to wait CDC approval to get tested. I’ll see it on Monday..
Stay safe and sane. I can only imagine what kind of workload you have to go through. :/
