The recent Tumblr ios update can be traced back to government efforts targeting financial institutions to drive sex workers further underground. Companies like Apple are required to enforce policies that end up being comically absurd in practice (Tumblr's chosen list of banned words). The Canadian government has similar legislation. This article highlights the efforts made by credit union Vancity to support sex workers in the face of discriminatory financial rules and further explains the struggles these workers deal with when it comes to opening a bank account. Federal guidelines need to change before any real progress can be made.
