British Cycling Talent Finlay Tarling Dies at 19 After Tragic Crash at Volta a Portugal
The 19-year-old Welsh cyclist died Friday after a serious accident during Stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal, while racing for the NSN Development Team.
The stage, running from Melgaço to Fafe, was neutralized with approximately 23 kilometers remaining. The planned podium ceremony was also cancelled as a mark of respect.
Tarling was considered one of Britain's promising young cycling talents. He was particularly strong against the clock and finished third in the 2026 British national U23 time trial.
He was also the younger brother of professional cyclist Josh Tarling.
His team said it was “heartbroken” by his death and remembered Finlay not only as a cyclist, but as a son, brother and friend.
