Sometimes, in writing, I get a bad feeling about something I’m writing, that I’ve used a harmful trope that perpetuates harm against real people. It’s important to listen to that feeling, to know when to make changes in the story to fix it. My stories must never be the bludgeon to hurt a marginalized person, another straw heaped upon the camel’s back, or yet another pin pushed into someone’s flesh labeled ‘you are not a person, you do not matter’. I know how that feels, and it’s awful, and I never want to do that to anyone.

That feeling is, unfortunately, almost indistinguishable from the baseline author feeling of ‘your writing is bad and you should feel bad and give up’.
