April is Second Chances Month.... no better time than now to rethink our broken criminal and juvenile legal systems. What I’ve learned in these few years is, when crisis comes, it’s those who are judged the harshest who lead the charge to protect us all. We deserve forgiveness, we deserve to have access to the same basic human rights as everyone else and we deserve to be more than our pasts. #powerofforgiveness #secondchances Instead of working so hard to tear down a person's future by dwelling on their past, try taking the time to embrace them as a human being, exactly at the point they are right now. Every year since 2016 we’ve adopted a few families for the holidays. This year, we’ve adopted 8 families thanks to your donations and support throughout the year. Thanks to my spoiled brats for always sacrificing so we can be a blessing to others. Last year, one of the families we adopted was a young man who had recently been released. I knew he couldn’t afford Christmas for his 3 small kids and I didn’t want him to get in any trouble so we stepped in. We even were able to bless him and his mom, who had custody of the babies while he was incarcerated. He went to CDL school shortly after he came home and we helped get him driving right after graduation... most ppl have trouble finding employment with no OTR experience and parole and drivers license issues create other barriers. Working through all that, he’s been driving for almost a year. We popped up and surprised his family again but he had surprises for us! He and his fiancé (yes fiancé!) are buying their first home and scheduled to close early next year! If I could discuss some of the conversations I've had with people who have never experienced the criminal or juvenile justice systems themselves, you would probably think that the information and data and statistics aren't out there about the power of forgiveness or the power of second chances yet here we are.... So this happened today and I couldn’t be prouder... I’m a worker bee, I don’t like the spotlight so public speaking has never been my thing but after being invited by the director, I agreed to speak without hesitation. 10 sec after hanging up, I asked myself “WHAT did I just agree to”. This was my very first speaking engagement with a huge crowd. I just recently joined Toastmasters to work on public speaking and I wrote notes and practiced and prepared and was still nervous. The ladies were so amazing, I’m truly humbled and was so glad I didn’t say no. I didn’t use one note, I just shared my story from the heart and it was just as much therapy for me as it was for them. Im thankful for the 26 graduates; they’ve overcome so much.
