My adventures in making my own fimo face cabochons (and assorted other things).
Most are UV resin coated, but I've started experimenting with just a few coats of acrylic to protect the color (it's mostly alcohol markers, which stay on very well, but I've also used ink, watercolor, pastels and acrylic paint lately), before waxing.
If I don't protect the color first, the wax tends to wash it away. Or maybe I'm not waiting long enough to buff, that's possible. I'm really doing this blind so far.
After I do a first color pass, sometimes I drill patterns and I fill those with a contrasting color. I also usually make patterns with another color or make another pass to burnish edges or lighten them, or I use metallic markers or paint, just experimenting to see what I get.
It's not always successful ^^;
UV coating isn't easy on a surface that isn't flat, especially since I tend to do 2 or 3 faces at the same time so I have to be very quick and make the resin go where it's supposed to go, and then make a few passes with my old heat-gun to pop bubbles (sometimes they don't all pop. you'd think with such a small item and such a thin coating there wouldn't be bubbles, and yet…)
At the very first, I tried coating with some liquid fimo but I wasn't very succesful. I need to try it again sometime.
Anyway, I have plenty of face cabochons now. Because it's pretty fun to make them and I need an artistic outlet when I'm procrastinating or between work sessions. ¯\_(•—•)_/¯
Then the other day, I decided to make myself a color sampler for fimo because there's always a color change when I apply markers, so I rolled out some super thin rectangles and baked them. and now I have this.
It's pretty small, about 4 x 6 cm.
I had two cards left so I drew stuff on them ^^;
And now I have two cool little cards that serve no purpose xD
… they're cute so I think I'm going to make more. ¯\_(ಠ.ಠ)_/¯
But only until I finish that fimo block I have. They suddenly doubled the price of those for some reason so it's not as inexpensive to make this stuff as it was before. *grumbles*
