I... have not actually read the comic he is from yet, so I will freely admit this did spoil me somewhat as to what to expect. But still, it sounds like you developed a good origin for the character here. Having not read the comic I cannot comment on how much was drawn from the comic itself and how much was your own invention, but either way, it works!
