how to filter tags on tumblr
this has been a feature for a while on both desktop and mobile, but itâs struck me that a lot of people donât really know about it and/or how to use it, and since my color palette post was so well received i thought iâd do another explanatory post so people can use this really useful feature!
how to filter tags on mobile
1. go to your blog
2. go to settings (the wheel in the top right corner)
3. go to general settings (the top option)
4. go to filtering (you may need to scroll down a bit, but it should be there if your app is relatively up to date - if itâs there not update your app)
5. click the blue text â+Newâ that should be towards the top right
6. type the tag you wish to filter out
7. click âAddâ when youâre done
and done! posts tagged with that tag will now be filtered!
how to filter tags on desktop
1. from the dashboard click the person-shape in the top right
2. a drop down menu will pop up: click settings
3. youâll find a page labeled âAccountâ: now scroll down to the section called âFilteringâ
4. click the grey image of a pencil
5. type the tag you wish to filter out into the âAdd a Filterâ
6. click the blue âAddâ button
and done! this method will also filter out posts tagged with those tags!
how to view filtered posts
posts that youâre filtered out will look like this (on desktop, the mobile version is basically the same):
if you click the âView postâ button in the middle the post whole will appear so you can view it anyway! this makes it possible to warn yourself for heavy topics but still be able to view it at your own pace. (though this only works if people actually tag their posts, which is a whole issue on its own)
some other notes:
a post will also be filtered if the OP tags it, so even if the post on your dash doesnât have any visible tags, if the OP tagged it as âlong postâ itâll still be filtered out for you! (and pro tip if you filter out tags like âtruscumâ or âterf safeâ etc you can see seemingly innocent posts that come from malicious sources, which is very useful)
the biggest problem i have with filtering is that itâs not that flexible, as in the tag used in the post has to exactly match the one filtered away, but i think it more than makes up for it by being a generally useful tool, and you can enter as many filters as you want so itâs fully possible to add several variations, like âlong postâ, âlong postsâ, and âtw long postâ, etc
