A trip that had supposed to be a few weeks had shifted into a month, and had been completely derailed by the announcement of the attack on Coruscant. As soon as he had heard, Anakin was overcome with panic. He needed to be there. He needed to know if Padmé was safe. He had told Obi-Wan of his plans, and although the Jedi Master was disappointed, he had ultimately accepted his decision. The plan had been for him to tender his resignation as soon as they were back on Coruscant. What happened next was completely unexpected. Somehow the Separatists had managed to sweep into the capital and capture the Chancellor. He and Obi-Wan had been tasked with rescuing him.
The rescue had gone successfully, and Anakin had defeated Dooku in battle. Normally the accomplishment would have brought him joy, which it did, but it was tempered by the manner in which he had killed him. He had been an unarmed prisoner. And despite all of the Sith Lord’s misdeeds, to kill in cold blood was not the Jedi way. The Chancellor had reminded him that this hadn’t been the first time, but this was different. He knew he was better than that, and he felt that he had been getting better, only to slide into darkness.
Being with Padmé again would bring him clarity. Excitement was humming in his veins as he all too eagerly exited the transport that had brought him and Palpatine to the Senate. While the former convened with the gathering of Senators that had formed on the landing platform, Anakin eagerly scanned the crowd for any sign of his wife, hoping that she would be here.
