Maleficentâs grief seems to stretch on forever in every direction. Kinsale knows itâs not really the case. The Sea Kingdom never quite fell to ruin in her wake, perhaps because of Joyâs influence, and Kinsaleâs little oasis kept the worst of the destruction at a safe and sensible distance.
When the rain turns to snow, however, Kinsale lets it fall. She doesnât intend to, exactlyâthe control the dark fae wield over the land isnât entirely voluntary. Itâs more that whatever part of her clung to a world that still bloomed and flourished grew weary of keeping up the farce. The winter rolls in, and Kinsale lets the snow fall.

Character Portrait of OC Mistress Zenovia from @allaganexarch 's Sleeping Beauty fanfiction The prisoner
"Zenovia had never been what one might call a âfairiesâ fairy. She was a scholar, a writer, a devoted practitioner of her craft. Not only did she have little time for idle chatter with fairies who were invariably digging for compliments or advice, she had absolutely no patience for it."

It was a beautiful and temperate summer evening. The whippoorwills were just starting up their distinctive song as the vibrant sunset gradually ceded to a clear night sky filled with stars. Senna remembers these things, because at the time she tried desperately to appreciate them. It is a beautiful night, she tried to tell herself, and you are alive and you are healthy.
But Senna didnât feel healthy. She barely even felt alive. Her whole body was unbearably heavy, and she felt as though her heart was trying to drag her down into the earth. She felt like she must be dying, too, for how long could a person bear such all-encompassing pain?
How could life go on all around her like this? How could it be such a beautiful night when so many terrible things had happened? Shouldnât the land around her be dry and barren as far as the eye could see? If she must live on, couldnât the world at least have the decency to bear the scars of its tragedies?

Sometime in the early hours of the morning, Kinsale finds Senna asleep on the beach. Senna doesnât know when or how she could have possibly fallen asleep. She and Joy talked for a long time. After Joy left, Sennaâs mind was overwrought. The last thing she remembers is staring up into the boundless sky, wondering how she would ever begin to wrap her mind around all she had learned. Then suddenly it was morning.
Kinsale leads Senna back to the road. She explains, apparently unfazed by Sennaâs utter inability to comprehend, that the sand makes it hard to get her footing, which apparently has some bearing upon her ability to rip a hole in the fabric of the universe.
Once again they are nowhere, and then they are somewhere again. Sennaâs stomach turns and her head spins, but at this point she canât decide whether itâs from the magic orâŚwell, everything else.
âOh, stars above, you must be very tired!â Kinsale exclaims at last. Senna guesses this must be true, even though she doesnât exactly feel tired. She picks herself up off the ground and greets Ruthie, and then she allows Kinsale to usher her inside and up the stairs to bed.
Just like it was on the beach, Senna lies in bed for what seems like a very long time, feeling as though she couldnât possibly go to sleep. Then suddenly the light through the windows has changed, and Senna realizes it must be late in the afternoon.
Though my patreon is not remotely up to date due to me being a talentless hack, I always offer a short prompt fill to anyone who chooses to make use of it anyway, and recently the lovely @doccutroll took me up on the offer!
âThank you for offering a short prompt fill; feels like Christmas came early!! Please could I request for a short one on the lives of Maleficent and Briar Rose after their reunion (could be before or after the Name Day)? /.../ I think I also yearned for a glimpse of their âhappily-ever-afterâ. I love my slow-burns and angst, but think we could all do with a heart-warming/touching one right now.â
I went with somewhere between the Big Confession Scene TM and the nameday stuff. It makes reference to some of the darker themes in the story as part of the healing process, but I think it generally hits the tone of warm-fuzzy at least by my standards LOL!

In the days following their rather dramatic reunion, Briar Rose and Maleficent fairly tiptoed around one another. Â Each was cordial to the other almost to the point of absurdity, but neither dared to venture too close, nor to discuss anything more meaningful than the book Maleficent was reading or the spell Rose was practicing.
In truth, they both felt keenly the fragility of the thread that bound them to one another. Â Not a handful of words had kept Briar Rose here. Not a handful of words had returned Maleficent to her usual form. Â Each was worried, in her own way, that it would take nothing more than another handful of words to shatter the peace, to remind the other of how very much stood between them, and to prompt the other to ask whether this hazy uncertainty was truly worth the trouble.
The weather turned bitterly cold, and the lot of them fully expected Zenovia to bid them leave, with her preference having been for several weeks prior to asking. Â But when she stood before them, ostensibly to do so, she said only, âIâve never had much of a hand for textiles, but Mistress Kinsale has graciously offered to fashion you both some warmer blankets.â Â She flicked her hand in the direction of the fireplace to rekindle the dying flames. Â âGood evening.â
Maleficent and Rose watched her go from their opposite ends of the sofa, momentarily distracted from whatever stilted conversation theyâd been putting on for the past hour.
âI always thought she really disliked Kinsale,â said Maleficent with a soft kind of amusement. âSomething about taking care of myself in the company of such unscrupulous persons. Â Seems she only wanted her all to herself.â
Nervous laughter bubbled up in Briar Roseâs chest, and she covered her mouth in surprise. Â âPerhaps she changed,â Rose protested. Â âPerhaps Kinsale changed, too.â
âThat is certainly true on both counts,â Maleficent conceded. Â âBut to change oneâs opinion of another so utterly? Â I think Iâd pretend I hadnât purely for the sake of my pride.â
Rose bit the inside of her cheek to dampen her laughter. Â âDid you always secretly admire me, then?â she teased, pulling herself up to sit on her knees. Â âOr was it purely for the sake of your pride that you thought you might be better off living as a dragon to avoid me?â
âThatâs not what I said,â Maleficent turned to her, taken aback.
Roseâs good humour faltered, and the fear of ruining everything came rushing back to her. Â She averted her eyes. Â âYou might as well have,â she insisted. Â âAnd anyway, that is more or less what Kinsale said.â
Maleficent scoffed, but it wasnât a harsh sound. Â Rose felt something in her chest unclench ever so slightly. Â âOf course she did.â
âYou didnât answer my question,â Rose dared a glance upward.
âHm.â Â The setting sun from the windows cast dramatic shadows upon the hard lines of Maleficentâs face. Â She was no longer weak from her brushes with death, nor was she cruelly cut off from her full potential as a sorceress. Â Briar Rose sometimes felt acutely that she had been foolish to feel afraid of Maleficent when first they had departed from the Eastern Kingdom, for she realized now that Maleficent had never been less powerful.
âI think it was stranger to realize that I didnât dislike you, when I had fully expected to,â said Maleficent at last.
Rose let out a quiet huff of laughter. Â Perhaps it was the same for Zenovia, she thought to say, but she was not eager to interrupt Maleficent if Maleficent was going to keep saying nice things about her. Â She crawled over to the middle seat of the sofa.
âThere is much to admire about you, certainly, butââ Maleficent turned to face her, startled by the sudden closeness.
âBut?â Rose wrinkled her nose.
âBut,â Maleficent eyed her curiously, âwhen one is determined to dislike a person, she often ignores such inconveniences.â
Rose sat back on her knees, nervous she was pushing her luck, but she could not hide her growing smile. âWell, in that case, I hope I was dreadfully inconvenient,â she said airily.
âAnd you remain thus,â Maleficent retorted pleasantly, turning her gaze upon the fire.
âWhy?â Rose leaned in again, not quite contented to let the matter lie. Â âBecause youâre still determined to dislike me?â
âBecauseââ Maleficent turned to face her again, but whatever witty comeback she had prepared died on her lips. Â Rose had leaned in very close, and Maleficent had turned very abruptly. Â Rose kissed her before she lost her nerve, and Maleficentâs soft inhalation told her that she had not erred.
When their lips parted, Rose could see in her periphery that Maleficentâs hands were balled into fists atop her knees. Â Encouraged by her receptiveness, and not a little overeager for closeness, Rose adjusted her skirt so that she could swing her leg over Maleficentâs lap and rest her hands upon Maleficentâs shoulders. Â
Maleficent caught her by the waist with a soft noise of surprise, eyes downcast and lips parted. She inhaled as though to speak, but could not seem to bring herself to form the words. Â Rose wondered whether she had been a bit too bold, and should perhaps apologize profusely and retire to her side of the sofa.
âYou areâŚâ Maleficent began unsteadily, little more than a whisper, all but drowned out by the crackling fire.  Her tongue darted across her lips as she struggled to continue, ââŚvery young, you know. And after what you must have suffered at the hands ofâ  Well. I wouldnât wish toâŚâ
She did not continue. She didnât need to. Â Rose touched Maleficentâs cheek with her fingertips, and Maleficent looked up, dark eyes fairly gleaming with words unspoken, questions unasked.
âYouâre worried about me?â Rose asked her.
Maleficentâs brow furrowed subtly. Â Her lower lip twitched ever so slightly. Â âOf course I am,â she said, low and fervent.
Rose felt quite suddenly that she might weep, and now it was her turn to cast her eyes downward. Â She wrapped her arms tightly about Maleficent and lay her head upon Maleficentâs shoulder, and she breathed in slowly and deeply.
There was a feeling she could not put into words. Â Indeed, her every attempt to do so felt paltry and simplistic. Â No one ever worried about me then, she thought to say, but that wasnât quite right. They had worried, certainly, her parents and her fairy aunties, but in a manner which felt distant and foreign, as though she were some unfathomable creature, utterly beyond their comprehension.
No one had thought to mention that perhaps it was wrong of Phillip to come into her bed when she did not want him there, when she did not have the strength to refuse him. Â Indeed, she could see now with the benefit of distance that her aunties had believed Briar Rose to be the one in the wrong, had believed that she must have been bewitched or worse.
Of all that had transpired during that time, Briar Rose realized, Roseâs family had believed that her longing for Maleficent had been the most contemptible, the most unnatural of all.
Distantly, Rose realized that she had begun to weep after all, and Maleficent had begun to trace calming circles across her back. Â She held Maleficent tighter, buried her face deeper in dark fabric of Maleficentâs robes, sought to blot out every trace of the physical realm until she could see nothing, hear nothing, feel nothing but the warmth of Maleficent beneath her and the soothing, tingly sensation of Maleficentâs fingertips upon her back.
âThere is much to admire about you, Briar Rose,â said Maleficent softly, in that voice that felt like a memory of a dream.  âI could never seek to understand anyone who had treated me with such unfeeling cruelty, no matter the intent.  It isâŚ.worrisome, to those of us who know all too well exactly how merciless this world can be. But I daresay you shall learn in due course when a personâs crueltyâor a fairyâsâis beyond understanding, and, perhaps more importantly, you shall cease to reproach yourself for it.â
Rose relinquished her hold on Maleficent at last, if only by a fraction, and dried her eyes with her sleeve. She wondered to whom Maleficent was referringâto Phillip, the good fairies, or herself? Â But when she met Maleficentâs eyes, Maleficent smiled warmly, and Rose suddenly found that nothing else was quite so worthy of her attention anymore.
Maleficent touched Roseâs face, light as a breeze, and inclined her head in the direction of the windows. Â âItâs started to snow,â she said. Â âWould you like to go out and see?â
Rose nodded mutely, not a little stunned by the apparent change in Maleficentâs usual demeanour. Â She stood slowly, still clutching at Maleficentâs arms. Â She was not quite willing to let go of Maleficent entirely, lest Maleficent withdraw from her, as she was wont to do, and Rose spent another fortnight working up the courage to breach the distance between them once again.
Outside, the bitter wind had let up, and the snow fell gently. Â How long had it been, she wondered, since she had seen snow like this? It blotted out the unbearable colour and noise of the world and left a blissful stillness in its wake, broken only by the soft crunch of footsteps in the snow and the little rustle of fabric as Rose situated herself against Maleficentâs side, beneath the comfortable weight of her cloaked arm. Â Maleficentâs long, elegant fingers curled around Roseâs shoulder and drew her nearer still, and Briar Rose shut her eyes tight and breathed the moment in.
â Maleficent wore a gown of deep purple, with a flowing skirt and sleeves that billowed around her even as there was no wind to cause such a thing.  Her hair shone in the sunlight, longer and sleeker than Rose remembered, and no longer charred at the ends.  With a wave of her hands, she swept it away from her face into a simple, elegant bun that emphasized her dramatic widowâs peak.  Her flawless green skin, too, seemed to glow faintly in the gentle light of day, and as far as Rose could tell, there were no more scars to be found on her face or hands.â - AO3 The Prisoner
