SOUTH WEST ENGLAND FIBRESHED
The SW Fibreshed is building a community of fibre and dye growers, processors, makers and manufacturers across the South West to start a conversation about how we can produce more home-grown textiles and garments in a more healthy, resilient and regenerative textile ecosystem.
To support the development of the Farming Fashion: Wool: a Regenerative Farming to Fashion Resources Toolkit, I have been collaborating as an academic adviser.
A couple awesome reviews from a couple awesome makers @balavitidesigns and @heavenlyhotpacks Look at the balls in the first photo, this is after two years of using for a family of four and commercial usage of washing fabrics for her product. No pills, no change in size and no falling apart. This is what sets our dryer balls apart from others. We strive to make products that will last to end the repurchasing cycle. Hence our dryer balls lasting over 1,000 uses compared to most lasting 100-500 uses. Fibreshed Knitalong Week 3
starting to get annoyed that my posts from my phone are not posting.... but moving on...
Week 3: share what local means to you, what comes to mind around the theme ‘for the love of place’?
Local, to me, means where your heart is, where you feel comfortable, where you call home... local can be on many levels - immediate area (suburb), and wider area, (City).... and then wider again country. Where we have built our home is a beautiful secluded suburb in outer Melbourne, it often feels like we are far away from the city with the wildlife, and nature surrounding us.
I am lucky enough to live in a place rich with indigenous heritage, scar trees which tell their own amazing stories fill our parks, and I am blessed to have one in my street. Our indigenous forebears were carers of the land, they worked with the local area to ensure it would sustain them well. I feel our role living in this area is to ensure that heritage remains, and is remembered.
The wool I purchased was a fleece from further down the Mornington Peninsula, and 20 minutes from where I live. I have lived and loved and grown in this area for over 25 years, and look forward to many more years, building a sense of community with others.
I am really loving getting involved in creating fabrics from local yarns, and pretty pleased with how it is progressing so far.
By the end of week 3, I had spun approx 140 grams of light grey and dark grey (which came from the same fleece)
I only used one of the light grey skeins for the light grey and I started the dark grey. Very happy with the contrast effect.
Fibreshed Knitalong Week 2:
Disappointed that my original post didn’t post, ah well take two. Loving using a fibre that I feel I know the history of , I even saw photos of the lambs mummy… I felt special being able to choose the fleece and knowing it had been recently shorn, the softness and lanolin in the fleece. A definite connection with the grower, the sheep and the land. I am making progress on the shawl, have finished the first wedge and have the pattern down pat. Very simple but effective.
Fibreshed Knitalong Week 1 Joining in this global knitalong project exploring designing fashion with a smaller footprint. The purpose of fibreshed projects is to use fibres, yarn and dyes which are local…within 200/500km. Thus reducing the footprint created when creating garments, I find this to be a much more mindful way to create. As I have been purchasing wool or fibres I have been conscious of asking exactly where the fleece was grown. Steph and Ryan breed some beautiful corriedale speed, mainly coloured, in Langwarrin, 20 minutes from home. I bought the fleece, not knowing what I would make, but when the knitalong came up I thought it could work. The fleece ranges from silvery grey to black. I have spent this week spinning and plying. I washed/scoured my first batch ready to start knitting. The yarn really plumped up after the wash, looking forward to seeing it dry.
