Culture Collide Saturday Feature: The Lighthouse and The Whaler "Pioneers"
Check out this four piece band from Cleveland, OH whose name conjures up anti-transcendental waves of literature that hit the indie rocks off the coast of Massachusetts. Alright, that last sentence was as long winded as the Moby Dick novel that their name is derived from but don't hold it against the band. They play at 9:00 PM on Saturday night at the Taix front lounge directly after another sfnw favorite Young Buffalo who plays at the same location at 8:00 PM Saturday. The Lighthouse and the Whaler also happened to win the Peter Gabriel cover challenge with their cover of "That Voice Again". You can read more about that at Filter.

Culture Collide Saturday Feature: Ewert and the Two Dragons "(In the End) There's Only Love"
This band from Estonia plays Friday night at 10:30 at the Echo, but if you are not able to catch them then, you have two more opportunities on Saturday: 7:00 PM at Origami (which follows a 6:00 set by previously featured Moss) as well as 9:00 PM at the Echoplex. Ewert Sundja is the vocalist and the band has three other members but only two Dragons? Not to fear, one of the dragons is said to consist of two heads. So all band members aka dragons are accounted for. This band (winner of 3 Estonian Music Awards) is currently huge in the Baltic states and we can only expect them to breathe hot fire on you. The last time LA experienced a visitor with this much hype from Estonia we ended up with Encino Man.
Culture Collide Friday Feature: Moss "I am Human"
I didn't know this band before doing research for Culture Collide but I am glad I discovered them. They hail from Netherlands and make a quick stop in Brooklyn before heading to LA's echoplex on Friday night at 9:00 PM and then headlining the Taix Front Lounge on Saturday night at 12:00 AM. Their sound really draws you in with smooth vocals, chilling harmonies that reminds me a little bit of band of horses (rough comparison, I know). They play two nights so definitely worth checking out either Friday or Saturday.

Of Monsters and Men plays an acoustic version of "Mountain Sound" at Outside Lands 2012
I would add this band to any ideal festival lineup. They absolutely killed it at Outside Lands this year. Probably my favorite performance from any band that weekend. Well this video produced by Bonnaroo 365 is an absolute gem. They are so likable as a band. Charming, humble, and as catchy as you can get without being too catchy. I wish this performance took place at the Chocolands portion of Outside Lands in a similar fashion to Jack White's surprise show so that fans could have caught a glimpse of this live performance but the video is intimate and fun taking place somewhere in the grassy greens Golden Gate Park. I will catch this band any place they play from as they are potent in intimate smaller venues or festivals like Outside Lands or perhaps... Coachella 2013?
Culture Collide, Thursday Night Feature: Colorfeels "Pretty Walk"
Check out the Nashville quintet, Colorfeels headlining the Taix Front Lounge on Thursday 10/4 at Filter Magazine's Culture Collide. They have been described as sounding similar to Grizzly Bear and the Local Natives and while I can definitely see that comparison, you also hear much more of an Americana influence which makes sense since they come from the Nashville, TN area. Good to see that even at a festival showcasing bands from all around the world, the good ol USA can still represent.

Thursday Night Feature: American Royalty "Matchstick"
$20 gets you 4 great days of music with multiple stages/venues hosting great bands from all over the world. We'll be doing coverage showcasing SFNW favorites that will be playing Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday... starting with American Royalty (above check their song "Matchstick") who plays Thursday at 10:30 PM at the Echo. American Royalty reminds me of early Black Keys with a bit of an electronic influence. We're excited to catch them live after we missed their summer residency at the Echo.
