Ferus faced the alley wall. The blaster was held right at the tender part of his neck, and his companion wasnāt shy about pressing the barrel hard into his flesh.
āDo you think weāre stupid?ā his assailant asked.
āWhoās we?ā
The barrel was pushed even deeper. Ferus tried not to wince. He was getting annoyed. He knew he could disarm whoever it was behind him in seconds, but he also knew that aggression at this point wouldnāt get him what he wanted.
āDo you think weāre stupid?ā the assailant repeated.
āNo. I donāt think youāre stupid. A little short on manners, maybe.ā

Chapter 4
āI hope youāre competent enough to solve all these problems.ā
Anakin felt his cheeks flush with anger. Ignoring Ferus and his taunting remarks, Skywalker rushed to the pilotās seat.
The control panel responded instantly to his touch. The indicators lit up, and he ran a system diagnostic.
Tru looked at him questioningly.
āEverythingās fine,ā Skywalker said, trying to convey his confidence through his voice. āIt was just some kind of glitch.ā
Tru nodded at him. Anakin didnāt even glance at Ferus. He sensed his victory and savored it for a brief moment.
Anakin knew that Ferus was staring intently at him right now, but he pretended not to care.
Ferus said nothing; he just watched. Anakin thought heād like to know what Ferus was thinking at that moment. The tension eased, but still, for some reason, he felt uneasy.
And then Anakin suddenly remembered that he had felt something like this beforeābut in a dream.
A fragment of a recent dream flashed before Anakinās mindās eye. It wasnāt a nightmare, but it was an unpleasant dream.
He was wandering somewhere in the deep basements of the Temple, cut off from the other Jedi, and constantly sensing someone's presence. Someone was following him everywhere, and that presence was not benevolent. Anakin tried to move faster, but he couldnāt shake off the pursuit because his pursuer was also speeding up. But the most unsettling thing was that he couldnāt figure out who this person was. This entity, as if invisible, vanished every time Anakin tried to turn around to reveal the identity of the unknown enemy. And moments later, it would instantly reappear somewhere behind him.
Anakinās face was covered in sweat from exhaustion and irritation. The skin on his face felt like rubber. That nasty aftertaste from his sleep still lingered.
He glanced at the main screen, but the diagnostics showed no resultsāthe system had either frozen again or was running very slowly.
āDamn it! What the hell is going on?ā
Skywalker glanced to the side, his gaze landing on Ferus. The senior Padawan had his arms crossed over his chest and, leaning back against the control panel, was talking to Tru.
āDo you remember the person who gave you the shipās access codes? Didnāt anything seem strange to you?ā Olin asked.
āYou mean the race organizerās assistant? Well, yeah. He told me the ship had some problems with the landing gear, but the hyperdrive worksāthough it needs a little tweakingāand a few other minor things⦠What surprised me most was how big the ship is. After all, we were promised a small two-seater ship. So, we got an outdated transport model, and it's spacious enough for a crew of ten.ā Veld mused.
āSo you donāt think he cheated you?ā
āI canāt accuse him of dishonesty. He openly warned that the ship was old and would need repairs. And he assured me that I and the incredible winning racer would be able to fix any problems quickly and easily, so we could go to the edge of the Galaxy.
āIt seems he flattered you a bit after all, doesnāt it?ā said Ferus. āAnd can you get in touch with him?ā
āUm⦠No. He was the one who contacted us or left a message. He didnāt give us a way to reach him.ā
āAnd what about the main organizer of these illegal races?ā
āWeāve never seen him. He didnāt show his face, for obvious reasonsāyou understand.ā
Anakin frowned. Olinās sharp yet calm voice drilled into Anakinās head like a drill bit. It was extremely annoying.
Olin asked new questions, the gist of which Anakin didnāt catch, but none of Veldās answers satisfied the nasty know-it-all.
āSorry, Tru,ā said Ferus, āEverything youāve told me means nothing good. I donāt understand how anyone could agree to participate in the event like this, but Iām more concerned about something else. The organizer of your races, as well as his assistants, are nowhere to be found. Itās also impossible to contact them until they themselves decide to get in touch with you to retrieve their ship. But if that ship, for example, falls apart along with us, our Masters will have no one to hold accountable.ā
Anakin felt a migraine coming on in the front of his head. He had so many objections and emotions swirling inside him that he couldnāt focus enough to figure out why he was so nervous and angry. But one thing he knew for sureāthis idiot Ferus should have studied to be a lawyer, someone who would pounce on every little violation and sue everyone in sight.
āWhat does that matter now? Weāre so far from Coruscant!ā Anakin finally chimed in. āWeāre not kids. We can decide for ourselves when and how to repair the ship. And by the way, all three of us are capable of solving problems on our own. But you, Olin, can consider yourself a child who canāt do a single thing without the Masterās permission.ā
āIām of legal age, in case you didnāt know,ā Olin replied coolly and rudely. āUnlike you. Youāre the child.ā
Anakin bristled. He sensed heād gotten under Ferusās skin, but his rival had struck back.
āThat doesnāt do you much good when it comes to handling things on your own, āadultā.ā Anakin smirked triumphantly.
Ferusās face flushed slightly.
āIt seems the fact that the reboot control system happened to you, and not to me or Tru, gives you an extra point on your self-esteem scale.ā
āMy self-esteem is none of your business!ā
āOf course.ā The nasty man agreed readily. āBecause Iām not interested in either your self-esteem or your personality.ā
Anakin thought that he would beat Ferus after all. Maybe not right now, but a little later. Neither the Code, nor his Master, nor his best friend would stop him from doing it. Because that insolent, arrogant idiot was asking for it.
Meanwhile, Olin, unaware of Anakinās thoughts, gave Veld a piercing look.
āInformation sharing in the criminal underworld works the same way as so many other things. No one knows anything until you pay; no one turns in criminals; and, of course, no one takes responsibility for anything, even if you pay the asking price. This way of life is familiar to Anakin. But what about you, Tru? Donāt you find this system repulsive?ā
āAnything concerning my ship and how we acquired it is none of your business!ā Anakin interjected again, unable to restrain himself. He could see that Ferus was trying to manipulate the situation and didnāt want to let him drag Tru into such schemes. But what angered him most was Ferusās insinuation about his childhood on Tatooine.
āItās my business as long as Iām here,ā Olin retorted.
āYou can jump overboard, right now!ā Anakin snapped.
āStop it, both of you!ā Tru said irritably. āLetās agree that we wonāt argue or insult each other anymore. Besides, weāre a team.ā
āWeāre not a team,ā Skywalker retorted contemptuously. āNot with him, anyway.ā
āAnakin! You were the one who decided to bring Ferus along on this trip. It was entirely your decision.ā Veld said reproachfully.
āBut I didnāt know heād be such a jerk!ā
āSo, Anakin, cut it out. Everythingās fine. We have no reason to argue.ā
āSure!ā Anakin hissed, ābut that smooth-talking jerk is going to find them, because he canāt help himself. As you can see, I didnāt start this.ā
āFerus?ā Tru turned to his friend.
Olin held out his palms to Tru, gesturing that he was giving up. And at that moment, Anakin suspected that Ferus had always simply loved feeling like the person who did everything exactly right. For him, being the most righteous meant being better than everyone else.
And then it dawned on Anakin.
It was simply pride, sometimes manifesting as self-admiration!
How had he not realized this about Ferus before?
Anakin looked at his rival and saw that Ferus was accepting Truās arguments only to appear as the most virtuous Jedi.
It wasnāt as if Anakin was surprised by his realization now. Heād always known his rival was a hypocrite at heart, but still⦠Anakin was glad heād correctly assessed this man long ago, and now his pattern of behavior in any situation became clear. Olin would avoid direct confrontation for as long as possible. And simply because a Padawan who is confrontational and fights with his rival cannot serve as a role model for others, thatās why he agreed with Tru.
āI promise to exercise restraint until someone once again crosses the line of what constitutes reasonable behavior,ā Ferus said calmly. āBut Iāve taken note of your insult, Anakin, and youāll answer for it later.ā
āAnd Iām not promising anything. Especially not to him,ā Anakin declared resolutely, feeling contempt for the arrogant snob as he pointed his finger at the idiot. The pompous fool in the snow-white robe was, of course, offended. Well, what would he do now that he couldnāt complain to the Master? Maybe heād challenge him to a duel? That would be great, because he was always ready for that!
āThatās too much, even for the two of you! Something tells me Iāll have to report your feud to your Mastersā¦ā Tru suddenly declared.
Anakin and Ferus whipped their heads around in unison and glared at Tru. Their gazes at that moment were as similar as those of predatory snakes before an attack. It seemed as though 'the snakes' had reached an instant consensus to devour Tru Veld right then and there.
Tru immediately held out his palms and shook them.
āBut of course I wonāt do that,ā Veld explained right away.
Anakin and Ferus relaxed, but the mood was still somber.
The three of them suddenly felt awkward. It seemed as though they now shared a little secret.
āThis is strange,ā Ferus thought.
In fact, the two Padawans had broken several rules for Padawans. And theyād decided to hide it from their Masters, trusting that they could resolve their differences on their own.
They were both sitting on either side of their mutual friend. Both felt resentment. And at that moment, Ferus suddenly realized that he himself would tell his Master about it.
Because he didnāt want to keep a secret with Anakinānot even a small one.
It was never easy with Skywalker. It was time to get used to it. Olin knew that the most important thing was to remain true to himself. But what if the animosity overwhelmed him again so strongly that he could no longer remain impartial?
Ferus didnāt know what Siri would say to him, but at least he was sure she would never judge unfairly.
To his dismay, Ferus dropped to the floor and rolled underneath Anakin, then sprang up in one smooth movement. He was behind him now. Anakin had only a split second before he felt the touch of the lightsaber on his shoulder. It only just missed his neck. When he twisted away, he saw the gleam of triumph in Ferusās eyes.

fic authors self rec! when you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. let's spread the self-love š
@reconstructwriter Thanks for the challenge!
Well, here are my favorite 5 fics that I'm currently working on (Star Wars). I write a lot about Ferus, but if you think about it, Anakin is often the main character in my works.
Beyond the constellations and books
The times of the 'Jedi Quest'. This story of friendship and growing up. The enmity and rivalry between Anakin and Ferus. Slowburn.
2. Daddy Feri
Three years after the proclamation of the Empire, Darth Vader finds out that Leia is his daughter. Bail Organa gave her to the former Jedi in hopes of saving his adopted daughter from the Empire. Thus, Ferus Olin, Anakin's only rival in his youth, becomes the father of little Leia.
3. Fallen leaves of Aldera (+ Indoor dust)
Meeting Roan Lands divided Ferus Olin's life into before and after. These are two short fics about who Ferus was before he met his one true love and after he lost him forever.
4. The Siren of Dathomir
The false illusion woven by the magic of an ancient witch, where you want to stay because reality is worse than any lie.
5. The Sneer of the Force: I never ever wished Evil upon you
Anakin never understood why his rival Ferus always treated him so badly. He never wanted to hurt him.
"Olin, I have the great way to show you your place in my Empire, since you still haven't understood it," Vader continued with mock pleasure, not releasing the victim from the stranglehold of the Force. "I'm going to make a sex slave out of you."
Obi-Wan was already shaking his head. "I have my own task to fulfill. I will help you now, but then I must leave and never return."
"You can't mean that."
"I do."
"But there is so much to fight for."
"My days of fighting are over, for now."
"What can be more important?"
Obi-Wan didn't answer.
"I donāt like having to question a Jedi Master," Ferus said. "Old habits die hard. But are you kidding me? Youād rather hide than fight?"
The words and the manner shocked Obi-Wan. He kept silent in disapproval.
"Now donāt get all Jedi-proper on me," Ferus said. "I can see it on your face. Iām not your apprentice, Obi-Wan. You deserve my respect, of course. But Iāve learned to speak frankly. This is a new reality, a new galaxy."
