Ferraria crispa
Ferraria is a genus of bulbs in the Iris Family, with intricately crinkled and marked flowers that look sort of starfish-like, except that they have six points instead of 5. This one is Ferraria crispa, from western South Africa, occurring from Namaqualand southward and eastward to the Little Karoo. The flowers also have an unusual scent.

Ferraria is a genus in the Iris Family, widely distributed in the winter-rainfall region of southern Africa. The most commonly seen species is Ferraria crispa, dormant in the summer months and growing in winter, with the flowers coming out in spring before it goes dormant. The flowers are very unusual, looking almost like mutant starfish with their strange colors and markings (but with six points instead of 5). The nameĀ ācrispaā refers to the elaborately crinkled edges of the petals. The flowers also have an odd smell.

Ferraria is one of the many genera in the Iris Family found in South Africa, and this group has very distinctive flowers, looking almost starfish-like. The cup of the flower has dramatic speckling, while the outside has amazingly crisped and crinkled edges. To top it off, these flowers have a delightful fragrance. Ferraria crispa has a wide distribution in western South Africa.
