Cause of death: fatal bite wound.

Ferncurrent was a cold and lonely apprentice who became a serious and somewhat cranky warrior. That being said, he could be caring and patient towards his clanmates and especially his apprentices, which reflected well on him being accepting and encouraging of Rustdew switching careers.

Ferncurrent was good friends with Carpsnap. But he had a tense relationship with Cloverstar, which mostly came from Ferncurrent feeling like Cloverstar was doing a terrible job as a leader. The fact the deputy before Cloverheart was Ferncurrent's former mentor (and his father) Pikestream probably doesn't help much either. Ferncurrent is salty and believes Cloverstar didn't have the proper skills to be deputy nor leader, while Pikestream just fully retired and then died shortly after, and would have been a much better leader, in Fern's opinion.
