Galactic PeVatron confirmed: LHAASO J1912+1014u identified as a proton accelerator in the Milky Way Cosmic rays reaching peta-electronvolt energies have been recorded on Earth for decades, but the galactic sources capable of accelerating them — the elusive "PeVatrons" — have long resisted identification. A new study led by Tsunefumi Mizuno (Hiroshima Astrophysical Science Center), published on July 16, 2026 in The Astrophysical Journal, confirms LHAASO J1912+1014u as a proton PeVatron. Located near Altair in the constellation Aquila and originally considered a supernova-remnant candidate, the source was tested with a combined Fermi-LAT, FUGIN, and Chandra multiwavelength analysis.
