i think you can identify a similar eagerness in people who want to paint russians as white so they can have a free pass in being racist to them, and people who want to paint japanese people as basically white so they can have a free pass in being racist to them. peoples who aren't white get the brunt of the white guilt by having everything they do gleefully painted as imperialist, while white people get a pass as people who are considered full human beings with complexities and multiple sides. an extension of this is nonwhite impcorers who are also happy to call these people white and go along with the same farce as impcorers who don't have to confront that these peoples are humans like them
