I think great comedy comes from the oppressed. It comes from feeling like you’ve gotten punched up in a way. People have their guard down when they’re laughing, so they’re open to tougher conversations they wouldn’t necessarily have. If somebody is guarded while laughing, they’re a weirdo. Really, laughing is such a strange reaction to something. The idea of it is so bizarre, so instinctual and kind of magical.

Acting was a really beautiful complement to the music because music on its own is really hard. It's hard to constantly delve into your psyche and unearth these deep and often painful feelings and hold them out in front of people and say, 'Here's the most vulnerable part of me.'

I was buying hash in the wrong part of town — well, the right part of town for what I wanted, I suppose — and I hadn’t 
got my wits about me that day. I got jumped on, thrown into this f*cking rubbish chute with a big metal door, which immediately closed behind me and left just a crack of light coming through. And then 
a syringe was pressed to my throat, 
filled with what could have just been 
ketchup, but I wasn’t going to ask for 
the lab results. I’ll never forget that. That was very scary.”

“For me, a lot of it is about loneliness. I think a lot of our lives, in ways that seemingly are unrelated or obscure, are lived through the lens of trying to avoid loneliness at all costs. People stay in relationships longer than they should because they just can’t stand the thought of being alone. We can’t control everything, but we have more of an ability to have a say in our destiny, and in our happiness, than a lot of us explore.”

If there’s one ambiguity that I feel comfortable clearing up, it’s that I never for a second was thinking about how to portray someone innately evil.
