It's really the only solution that will end cops murdering people. It would force them to learn and utilize de-escalation tactics instead of shooting first. We should be more concerned about them murdering civilians than the relatively rare chance someone takes a shot at them -- this is based on statistics, not callousness on my part.

As for dealing with "armed and dangerous" criminals, I think there is room here to keep tactical units who are specially trained in firearms and confrontational situations. That is, in fact, what SWAT teams were supposed to be, originally.

I've heard that "this will never happen so why bother" but there are plenty of police forces around the world that use minimal weapons -- tasers, batons, etc. -- on regular duty, so it CAN happen. Having a cops with minimal defensive gear alongside tactical units for actually dangerous situations is absolutely a valid solution and absolutely can happen, if people give a damn.
